I found this to be a pretty solid scary movie. I hated the first Annabelle, so I was surprised to find a prequel that manages to have good acting from some young actors and some genuinely scary moments. The actual demon was pretty damn creepy when you just saw him in dark rooms with those glowing eyes. Probably the best one in the franchise after the two Conjuring movies. If you're looking for something to watch with friends on a dark, October night, this is a good choice.

Way more acceptable in quality than the first Annabelle, but still lacking a lot in contrast to the Conjuring films. Some of the scares are super good, and the acting is more than acceptable. The whole Annabelle concept is still a little trite, however, so while acting and direction carry the film, the story can lack at points.

If I've learned anything from Hollywood, it's that dolls are evil. Jigsaw, Chucky, Bride of Chucky, Seed of Chucky, Pinocchio--all evil. Annabelle? Sure, she's evil, but is she Child's Play 3 evil? Is she scary clown doll in Poltergeist evil? Is she Cabbage Patch evil? TEDDY RUXPIN EVIL? My gut tells me no. FUN FACT: It is not that easy to get church to send you a bus of free hot orphans, no matter how many times you tell them you've converted your haunted house into a hostelry.

A relatively decent spin-off outing featuring one of the worst elements of "The Conjuring," possessed dolls have been far overdone. Even if overused, Annabelle has an edge in the horror department because it's not interested in simply haunting people in this one, it's more capable of physically harming people. Truth be told, my biggest complaint is it could have used far less downtime, and far more demon doll killings.

Annabelle: Creation is a perfectly serviceable horror movie with a fun second half that will satisfy anyone who just wants to get startled and watch technically accomplished filmmaking. If you want strong characters or anything of consequence to chew on intellectually, you're in the wrong place. If its first half was better, Annabelle: Creation would be really solid. As it is? It's decent! And way, way better than the first Annabelle.

There is something about this franchise that doesn't connect with me. Annabelle: Creation is a solid piece of film work, especially with some excellent angels and visual effects that provide intrigue and scares, but I didn't feel moved by any of it. The film dragged on after about 20 minutes and doesn't pick back up till the last 15. The ending also leaves more to be desired, as you can see it coming early on. It also wants to remind you that the first one exists....for whatever reason.

Lots of creepy images, hanging onto a somewhat lacking storyline. But it did an answer one question that has been on my mind since The Conjuring and the answer is that yes, even when she was brand new, the Annabelle doll looked like the Devil's fondest childhood memory. Glad to have that out of the way.

Much better than the first but that wasn't a particularly high bar to clear. Creation is at least watchable and there are a few decent performances among the kids and some creepy enough moments, but it's still a mediocre retread of the style of the Conjur-verse that came before it. Annabelle the doll is still utterly uninteresting to me, and the movie would still have worked just as well if not better if she wasn't in it, proving how utterly pointless she is unless dolls freak you out.

Creation is certainly an improvement over the original Annabelle. And it never reaches the heights of the Conjuring films. The first half is actually gleefully scary and entertaining. It falls apart in the second half, even with the great actors to carry us to the end.

If these Conjuring movies get one thing right, it's that for the most part, they set up their jump scares in a tense and satisfying way - even if some of those setups go on too long. Significant uptick from the original Annabelle and closer in line with The Conjuring 1 in terms of quality, which is still a titular misnomer. "Demon Logic" in full effect, and there are some things here that will run the risk of taking you out of it. Didn't tank the experience; this is an exercise in good and bad.

Nothing extraordinary but it delivers solid scares,a cool atmosphere and great tension. The acting is very good even though the characters aren't that interesting.Overall it was a pleasant surprise despite not being that original.

Annabelle: Creation is a truly exciting documentary about making an awful horror movie. You can learn how to deal almost nothing with a very bad plot; see unrealistic children's behavior; be nostalgic about "Without a trace"; observe first hand the world's least suspenseful attempt at a thriller and really have a blast with the confusion of the writer regarding religion and how it's supposed to work. Yey, all that at the cost of almost two hours.

And while Creation acknowledges the need for faith, it's frustratingly enigmatic about how, when and why that faith works: Did that person who died with a crucifix in hand simply not have enough of faith? The movie doesn't have an answer. Annabelle: Creation is a mixed, R-rated bag. And even though it acknowledges the need for God to confront spiritual evil, its problems are still legion.

Surprisingly, this is a fairly well done sequel to a very mediocre spin-off. You don't need to see any other films for context. This is fun to watch and a decent scare as well.

Clearly indebted to Wan and the Conjuring, but it's still good. Some gorgeous scenes and great camera work. Some of the scares lose a little punch because they keep it tense a little too long. Why are children so fucking creepy.

Walked into this with rock bottom expectations and was pleasantly surprised by the decent acting in this. If you're familiar with the conjuring universe then expect more of the same. This is an origin story which tries its best to build on its own mythos. However it's not as well done as something Wan would have directed. Unfortunately it doesn't offer much over the typical jump scares either. To give the film credit it does bookend nicely with its own mythos.

Mixed feelings about this one I didn't hate it ....But I didn't love it either Definite improvement over the first film and I liked at the end how they tied the two films together Ultimately though the story ain't very good (I felt) the pacing was too slow between jump scares and the scares weren't very scary

Cliché mania! But that's part of why one watch it. For the scares, the ugly dolls and the familiarity of the The Conjuring franchise. For it's a polished mainstream horror film, serving exactly what it's audience wants. And I'm fairly hyped about The Nun....

I enjoyed this movie, not sure why it gets so much hate. David F. Sandberg is a very interesting director mainly due to the fact that while he brings nothing new to the genre and all his movies and shorts are filled or completely made up of clichés he manages to make really creepy, scary and good films.

Great scenery and directing. The story is very very simple. I felt bored. Scary? Sometimes, but not at all matching with a lot of people's opinion, and at the end, i was so careless that i didn't even feel scared. The story has a petential to be much deeper, and there is a potential for a big major twist. But nothing was there. Plus the simple story, there was a very stupid thing that they done that makes no sense at all. Scenery and directing saved the movie in my point of view.

Pretty decent. The overall style of these movies is definitely starting to get old, but it still worked where it counted. The scary scenes were good, with plenty of tension and an appropriate use of false scares. It also avoided a lot of the third act problems the other films in the series had. Solid acting all around, and nice cinematography.

SPOILER ALERT: AC is the point where The Conjuring universe really enters into Marvel territory. Not only is it pretty much a direct clone of The Conjuring in style, especially in its use of negative space, it also has a few crossover moments that set the stage for the next spin off (The Nun). The shoddy script really makes a mess of the whole 'mythology', and Sigman is the most perversely attractive nun I've ever seen. There are a few tense scenes, but it's too generic to recommend overall.

It's far from original and doesn't do much in the way of character development. It runs completely on atmosphere, which totally works for this one. This alone helps it become actually scary (even if it means the cheaper scares are all the more disappointing). Annabelle is terrifying. It focuses on the demon itself, just like the original failed to do.

"Sometimes dead is better..." Middling CONJURING prequel has a spookily cavernous farm house (echoes of REBECCA), and the novelty of much of the horror playing out against a sun dappled landscape is intriguing for a while. However the revelation of how the grieving parents allowed the horror to manifest itself gets a bad laugh, which seriously undermines the solemn and serious final act. It doesn't help that despite the locale change, we've essentially seen this same story many times before.

Not only a big improvement over the first one, but I found it better than the third Conjuring too. Pretty creative scenes, decent pacing, and creepy imagery (that upper body being a standout, would’ve liked more scarecrow too). Jump scares generally lean towards being predictable, but everything else was done well enough that it didn’t drag the film down too much.

I'm okay with internal logic being a little hokey, but there's a part late in this movie that undercuts the rest of the film, which makes the scariest part meaningless to me because it took such a stupid route to get there, even if the demon saying, "Or you can help" while trying to hand a knife to a kid was pretty rad. Aside from that, an okay horror flick; not astounding nor original, uses the same tactics as others, has some cool scenes. They thought that the doll was creepier than it is.

Some brief moments of genuine sisterly sweetness between our two leads aside, "Annabelle: Creation" is a film diametrically opposed to taking any risks, a lifeless horror jaunt so calculatedly cynical and telegraphed that no one scare is unexpected, no set piece original or frightening, and no cliche from the beginners guide to screenwriting left unsullied. Most horror movies make up for their inherent unoriginailty by subverting the tropes they champion. This is the bare minimum of effort.

Monster creation 101: Have limit to their powers, limit their powers with rules. This movie doesn't manage to create a set of consistent rules for the monster we are dealing with. So it just becomes a scary scene after scary scene type movie without any explanation why or how the monster can do what it can.

Cliche but effective. LaPaglia & Otto elevate acting level but none of the girls are 2 bad. Acting: non problematic. Direction: highly derivative but also does what it is aiming to do. Screenplay: weak & illogical. Nun is pretty but bit slow on uptake. As a logical atheist in 2018 I'd check 4 ergot on bread, visit shrink & suspect some1 dosing me b4 I'd accept reality of demonic possession & DRIVE (taking kids). Yet 4 a devout Nun in 50s (?) shouldn't she take that idea seriously from 1st death

Unique as a horror film origin story because, up until the very end, it isn't bogged down with the logic of the lore, suffocated with exposition, or interested in killing the mystery. It takes cues from James Wan's well-paced scares that are almost entirely detached from the plot. Of course, a handful of over-the-top moments and narrative hiccups prevent the movie from sustaining its high pitch for the entire runtime, but it's a fine if forgettable addition to the expanding Conjuring universe.

Quite handsomely shot. Story-wise it is of course impossible to actually care about any of what's going on, but for the first half or so the scare scenes are proficient technical exercises in creating and ratcheting up tension. As the story progresses, the need to raise the stakes leads to the scares getting silly and over-the-top (a problem that also hampered The Conjuring 2, hello Crooked Man) and by the time it turned into another fucking possession movie I had lost a lot of interest.

Not bad but the first half is paced a little too slowly. It lacks inventive scares & the characters are stuck in a holding pattern where everyone keeps acting the same way (esp Lapaglia) & doing the same things. It also takes too long for the mystery's reveal, but once it does about 2/3rds of the way in, the scares and attacks keep coming. However, by that point I was pretty much ready for the film to end. Still it does manage to tie into the first Annabelle unexpectedly and organically.
