After seizing an English ship, buccaneer captain Anne Providence spares Pierre LaRochelle from walking the plank - as he's in irons he is presumably no friend of England. He signs on as a pirate and she is increasingly drawn to him, a feeling that seems to be reciprocated. When fearsome Captain Blackbeard, her teacher in the ways of pirating, sets eyes on LaRochelle he recalls him as a French navy officer. Anne sticks by her man but the truth, when it is uncovered, is even more painful. (imdb)

In the first 8 minutes, a big fat boisterous pirate dumps a bag of silver coins on a table to bet on a fight between a man and a bear and boasts about it. That was the clencher. Full marks!

One of JT's most beautiful films. The whole of film is in this; Peter's jumping on the bow, cannon fire, and she's gone. Now that's a movie.

BlurayRip no MakingOff.

Swashbuckling adventure, dull by today's standards.

Swashbuckling girl action with Jean Peters, meaner than the meanest pirate! A lovely variation to the old Technicolor adventure films. She sure brings a lot of spunk as one of the most badass women put on-screen that year! And they surround her with all types of characters that fits into that crazy world. Damn entertaining!

We know from the moment Anne sends a sailor down the plank in the opening (if not from the premise) that she won't be getting a sunset sail-off. The dramatic irony of sorts produced by Old Hollywood morality is keenly felt throughout Peters' portrayal of the antiheroine in all her exuberance and naivete, straining futiley in the dual existence foisted upon her. An action-packed finale gives way to a sudden, haunting departure, and it's hard to imagine another director handling it the same way.
