A stunning failure at camp and an even worse musical.

Utterly bizarre, completely out of touch, but most of the time just laughably bad. Oh, and there's a good reason Sparks are still flying under pop culture's radar: their music is horse shit.

Probably sits more in the admiring what it's doing and going for than actually enjoying it for me. Little too theatre kid (with the sparks writing it was to be expected) for me.

Quite a spectacular viewing experience, even if I didn't really enjoy it that much. I can totally respect the weirdness and energy that Carax, Sparks, and cast give but this didn't have but a few great scenes for me. The bookends, in particular, are some of the best cinema of 2021.

I was expecting Annette to be absurd & pretentious, but wasn't entirely ready for a whimsical 'Marriage Story' with a demon puppet baby. Driver carries the film (as he often does) but at over 2 hrs it feels 30 mins too long. The music is good but the lyrics too repetitive; more akin to generic theatre camp than top-tier musical. Ultimately the film falls victim to too much tell (or sing) & not enough show. The ending works but is disappointingly the energetic antithesis of the opening number.

mother.....but better because it is directed by someone who's probably not like the character?? I'm glad this is the first film I saw in theatre after 17 months, but its novelty wears off rather quickly. still, an enjoyable comedy that hits the right notes most of the time.

Viewed August 8, 2021. Leos Carax and Sparks are a perfect match made in hell. Sparks' glossy, ironic aesthetic is balanced out by Carax's love for decaying surfaces and grandiose camera movements. The film is alienating, upsetting, darkly funny. Just like Sparks' music and Carax's other films, it reaches through the irony and surrealism into some intense and unexpected emotional crescendos; a tragic love story captured only in bold, inscrutable strokes.

The duet between Driver and McDowell at the end is the only time that there's a heart beat. Love: usage of colour and lighting, Carax is still on point. Driver, who was awesome. The songs are catchy. Dislike: maybe it's just me and not loving musicals in general, but I often feel like the singing takes the place of something more substantial. Lyrics too repetitive. Not played especially interestingly here. There's not much meat to it beyond how artistic it is. Too long. Original but shallow.

No idea how to rate this. I enjoyed Simon Helberg's bits, and obviously Marion Cotillard and Adam Driver were interesting to watch. I'm definitely not the target audience though.

Kino, sure, but My God I wish adam driver were denis lavant. But it's really one of those cases when the runtime is just long enough to contain a movie you don't care for jumbled up with one you adore.

a bizarre and interesting cinematic experience (which is why i'm approving it) but jesus it's so long, every single scene is stretched to no end and its 2h 20m runtime is definitely not justified at all

Conceptually pretty fantastic but the execution appears to be somewhere between lunacy and incompetence. Likely this is exactly the film Carax wanted to make, though, and I gotta respect the balls-to-the-wall insanity.

Its story of twisted fatherhood is surprisingly cohesive and Adam Driver gives a strong performance, but it’s at least half an hour too long and too many of the songs come across as improvised in melody and lyric. Compacted and with a better lyricist and composer, it could have been remarkable; as it is, a unique but only mildly interesting film relying almost solely on the director’s reputation and Driver’s performance.

Annette is incredibly original and engrossing in the moment. But it sadly ends up being more frustrating than anything by being deeply flawed and convoluted (while still being pretty simple), Written by the band Sparks, the script desperately needed an actual writer or someone to edit it. The first hour drags on, as nothing interesting happens and characterization beats get repeated. At least Driver's performance is amazing and some of the songs are earworms.

I have never seen a film that was so proud of its own emptiness. Annette's nihilism is completely unproductive and vain. Annette is laughing at its audience! It's a South Park episode that laughs at you for giving a shit. Carax is deeply sad and depressed. And that could be ok if he wouldn't turn that against his audience who has the audacity to try to make sense of stuff or still hopes for some beauty or joy. I don't think a movie has ever made me angrier, which is almost an achievement!

Carax works overtime to create a grandiose experience using color, sound and song, but he has neither the talent or the imagination to pull all of the disparate threads together, resulting in a pretentious mess that becomes sillier as it goes along. The lousy script and music are obvious weaknesses, and the character drama is too shallow and stupid to really engage with. Only an 'artist' drunk on his/her own hype is capable of producing fascinating failures of this size and scale.

The first movie I've seen in a long time that felt like more of an experience than "just" a movie. Definitely not for everyone, and I was certainly skeptical in the beginning, but wow did it ever win me over. Give Adam Driver his Oscar right freaking now.

I spent the first hour wondering what I got myself into. It's no doubt whimsical with committed performances, a sleek style, and cool music, but it's uneven, overlong, and surreal to a fault. A bold, original, but frustrating misfire.

So grandiose and ambitious, though not so much that it makes me forgive its many flaws -- quite a lot of the music is unmemorable, too reiterative to begin with, the ending is naff -- but there's still an intense feeling always lingering, though it gets particularly exacerbated when the titular character enters the picture, and Annette becomes both more emotionally involving and more satirically cheeky and funny.

Wow! For the very first second this totally blew me away. The plot and characters are quite simple, so I can get this doesn't work for everyone, but it's all about the magnificent cinematic experience it created for me. Like the accordion scene in Holy Motors or bridge scence of Les amants du pont-neuf stretched to an entire movie.

Ünlü 1 stand-upcı ve opera sanatçısı arasındaki aşkın meyvesinin sonuçlarını izliyoruz. Leos Carax'ın kayaya çarptığı film. Adam Driver'ın filmi kurtarmaya çalışması da içler acısı. Filmin 1 tek şarkısını beğendim. Hele Chucky'e özenmeleri. Hele o hayalet. Girişinde La La Land şarkısı. Başla hadi başka. Ve o saçma hapishane görüşme sonu. Bu senenin faciası. E bebeğim e. Uyumayacağım.

A fantastic showcase for the power of the auteur and the boundless inventiveness cinema can offer up. I think it could have been doing with some editing down, but it's a tour-de-force in cinematic imagination, for better and worse. Can definately verge on the ridiculous.

Pretty easy to file it next to Mulholland and other fame frenzy chronicles, but I find this to be so specific. Although it can easily be read as a postmodern epic stage spectacle on the both wicked and weird and and cheesy and lovely celebrity world we live in -- last line is Driver walking in prison saying 'stop watching me' -, it's also a highly emotional low fantasy fun farce. Gotta love the puppetry, the catchy songs, the tragic love thing, the precise comments on cancel culture and misogyny

A narratively sparse but dramatically potent musical. Carax's style matches the material, and the performances are ace (including that by the puppet), but I didn't like any of the songs.

It's pretty well-crafted but too offbeat for any sort of emotional investment. Sparks can clearly write a showtune, but the whole thing being sung-through does result in some long stretches of all the music blending together. Adam Driver as the lead has gotta be one of the more insane casting decisions in recent memory.

This is very much an arty film - it comes across as primarily a musical, with an almost operatic sense or setting to it...it may well be viewed as pretentious to some, though I did enjoy the musical numbers, the operatic singing and the rousing feel of it every so often. It's a bit hard to fully interpret, storywise, at times but the cast give good performances and its certainly entertaining - surprisingly engrossing at times. It won't appeal to all by any means but for what it is, its good.

Total misfire. Dreadful music, dialogue. The dissonance between the seriousness of performance and the cartoonish unreality of the events creates a painful (at times laughable) experience. I love Carax’s other work so much, it’s disheartening to witness.
