Mediocre. It suffers from some awful exposition, most of which comes from the voice-over narration, a technique that, at least here, feels lazy and pointless. I also had problems with the story in general. As was the case with Interiors, it's a little too obvious that Allen is ripping off Bergman. I know, it's always pretty obvious, but here it's just so blatant and the entire film feels like a second-rate version of Wild Strawberries or Scenes from a Marriage.

Ok, the problem is: Allen's dramas are always very didactic essays about past and resentments. Most of the scenes are superficial and irrelevant. Then, he uses that bergman-scheme, embedding those totaly forced and obvious dream-like sequences which are simply full-of-nothing narrative variations; soulless and largely meaningless. I'm not saying that this is the worst shit ever. But it does not mean much to me.

A very underrated and mostly forgotten Woody Allen film that I personally consider one of his best. This fluid and profound existential reflection on regret and self-delusion may be small in scale but its emotional resonance is astounding.

One of Woody's best and most solid films. Greatly accomplished Bergman references a stunning performance from Rowlands. Too bad it's so forgotten.

A beautiful film. Gena Rowlands is stunningly beautiful and acts with a perfect, natural poise. The entire cast is amazing, in fact. An absolutely wonderful film. Woody Allen's love of Bergman is clear.

Rushes a bit at the end and would perhaps have been better off without the over-explaining voice-over, but a good movie nevertheless.

A subdued and introspective movie full of some great themes of regret and optimism, as well as some great performances. I enjoyed the narration, which shifts around to the perspective of different characters while always being voiced by Marion. I also loved the way Marion would find herself a part of her own memories interacting with people from her past. Reminded me a lot of Wild Strawberries. More serious than other Allen, but nonetheless a great film.

This is exactly the kind of film I would make. It would be equally sophomoric, culturally and intellectually pandering (name and title drops like gunfire in an action movie), and in the shameful shadow of Bergman. Embarrassing viewing. [to convey how literally I intended the first sentence: I would have made an intrapersonal drama starring Gena Rowlands - featuring psychoanalysis and gratuitous use of Satie. I would have hired someone like Sven Nykvist, assuming that Sven Nykvist was dead.]

Pretty good. I still find the narration a little much, and the stiff, unrealistic Woody dialogue grates in a few scenes, but there isn't much to complain about otherwise. The dream scene with John Houseman being insanely old and regretful is devastating. Sven Nykvist commits as usual. Not enough Gene Hackman. Man, that poster is really stupid. Graphic design is my passion.

Intriguing and well-made, if a bit dry. The voice over doesn't detract too much, and the acting is solid from the leads, but a few smaller parts are poorly acted. The short length is welcomed, this film doesn't overstay its welcome.

Incredibly pedestrian film that's hardly dramatic or comedic. The autumnal feeling of the film is nice, but it may put you to sleep over how turgid and quintessentially (and skeletally) Allen-esque this film is. The nightmare scene is just ridiculous -- is Allen paying homage to Ingmar Bergman or is he parodying him?

Wonderfully grey sweaters and apartments. Refreshingly, Mia Farrow is regulated to a small supporting role (though she was supposed to play the lead) and in her place, Gena Rowlands gives an excellent performance. Plus, Hackman, Holm, Danner and SANDY DENNIS who is excellent. The narration's a bit disappointing but I personally couldn't think of a way to make those scenes work without it, so maybe it was necessary.

Good, though suffers from the characteristic self-consciousness of Woody's serious films.

Allen does Bergman, but does it well. Gena Rowland gives one of her best performances here, and Gene Hackman is good too.

Of the Woody Allen's "Bergman movies," (which is a totally unfair description,) this is probably his best. I don't like his Bergman emulation stuff as much as his other stuff, but I'm hardly unique there. Ian Holm's accent was wonky, but who cares about that. Also, Gena Rowlands's face is fucked. What's with that? But it was pretty good overall. Especially that theater dream sequence in the middle.

A Solid work. This is not a fast paced movie but it is profound in it's explanation of the feelings of a woman who has lost something she had prized (memories) because of shilding her feelings.. And she asks at the end " if a memory is something you have or something you've lost"

Not a huge Woody Allen fan, so this was a pleasant surprise. Not that I didn't have a few issues with it... Pauline Kael, as usual, nails it: "The picture is meant to be about emotion, but it has no emotion. It's smooth and high-toned; it's polished in its nothingness." The scene with Gene Hackman near the end, though, is lovely (because of him), and Sandy Dennis brings some welcome messiness into the mix. Rowlands is accomplished, but so... controlled. The narration is excessive and annoying.

Abstract, melancholy, and self-serious, perhaps more blatantly derivative than some other Allen films, but all the same well done and moving. Rowlands is fantastic as expected.

A very nice piece with many excellent moments. It's not exactly like any other Woody Allen movie, but fits in well with the other things he was doing at the time (Hannah and her Sisters and Alice in particular). Two elements especially elevated this movie for me: Erik Satie's "Gymnopédie" which I'm absolute sucker for, and Gene Hackman.

Clearly Woody is referencing Bergman here. Felt like a combination of Persona and Wild Strawberries, but not nearly as good. Rowlands is great in the lead and it was nice to see Farrow in the supporting role where she belongs. I think the film would've been better without the voice over explaining everything, but I still enjoyed it for what it is.

A mostly slow and somber examination of a woman's life. The pace is very slow. There are a few interesting elements, but it is mostly rather unrewarding. She sacrifices having children to pursue her career. She gets an unexpected look at how others see her which sets her to looking at herself introspectively and she doesn't like what she finds. I really disliked the confusing and meaningless dream sequences. The writing stunk.

Perhaps a bit too heavily influenced by 1970s Bergman to my liking, from the script to having Sven Nykvist as DP. Towering performances from Rowlands, Holm and Hackman build on the strengths of the characters, but it's missing Allen's usual humor, the plot overindulges in vain issues of fidelity, and there's not a great deal of psychological depth or nuance to any of it.

woody allen treats his script with an unanticipated delicacy. ultimately I find myself feeling somewhat detached to the characters (unlike the giggling seniors in the cinema, I might add). Id still say I prefer this to wild strawberries, though. pretty uneven acting as well.
