A terrible film, for sure, barely even a film -- yet for how grueling it is to sit through such a misguided topical film (one of the rare woke films that still has a very low Tomatometer), it's actually memorable for how it could've been an intelligent examination of how the USA treats black people today and how they did in the slavery era. But it doesn't surmise any of this like you think it would, and just conveys black suffering in that new woke fetishistic way, and embarrasses itself greatly

Wasted potential on a neat premise (Village 2.0). When it started on the plantation I thought, wow, they're not wasting time on a backstory. Then we spent the 1/3 of the movie w/her terrible friend(s) (and what's the msg re: the fat mean friend?). Otherwise it's the standard slavery torture you've seen many times to the risk of desensitization. Hopefully Monae gets better films. Didn't like the happy ending---some social commentary would've been nice. Fav scene: lighting the racists on fire.

I absolutely love Janelle, but this is a misfire in many senses. Not visually engaging at all and it's just too bad the narrative accepts the Black Mirror trick so easily. Could've been truly something.
