Marlon Riggs’s experimental music video politicizes the homoeroticism of African American men. With images—sensual, sexual, and defiant—and words intended to provoke, ANTHEM reasserts the “self-evident right” to life and liberty in an era of pervasive antigay, anti-Black backlash and hysterical cultural repression.

Viewed March 22, 2022. A great, highly evocative short that displays Marlon Riggs’ gift for layering sound bites and flashy, rhythmic editing of disparate image sources. A call for revolution and acceptance set amidst the AIDS epidemic (the film was made after Riggs’ AIDS diagnosis), Riggs’ technique melds joyful celebration with bleaker, more paranoid tones to dazzling effect.
