Wendigo? More like Wendistop! Scott Cooper is out there right now planning his next movie.

There are elements I like - it realizes the part of America that looks dead inside and knows it looking in the mirror, and goes about its gray and gloomy life praying for relief from anything but a wendigo, but a wendigo is what it gets, like it’s bottom-shelf bourbon. This may be the worst sentence I ever write but killing a child should have more impact than a half-hearted “mreh” that is forgotten as soon as it happens. On that note it’s as American a folk horror as you’ll find, however dull.

weak on the lore and weak overall.

I do like the practical effects and the creature is pretty creepy but this is mostly just a bad road that these trauma focused horror films are leading us down. Miserable and unfocused on anything (it’s about like 7 different traumas). The “native” element feels tacked on for no reason (seriously they go and talk to Greene’s character about it and nothing was really learned from it? He even asks if the kid is native and it isn’t touched on), although I’m glad Greene is getting work from it.

Pretty effective little chiller, playing up the real-world horror thanks to a very good performance by the lead kid. Good monster design too.
