it's 1999. Oliver Stone considers himself the great chronicler of American history through fiction. but unlike JFK or Nixon, there is no great singular myth to be spun about football. so instead we get a 150-minute hodgepodge of every cliché and stereotype, all utterly divorced from any convincing pathos or greater thematic purpose. the editing is an absolute disaster, to say nothing of everything else in the movie. borderline unwatchable.

One of those films that is essentially remembered for one scene; Pacino's super macho motivational speech. That scene has never done anything for me, and the rest of the film is a collection general cliche's and average performances, encompassing a sport I don't really care for.

One of the better looks (albeit unpleasant) at professional football in film. Money disputes, ownership miscues, career ending injuries, drugs. Pretty much summarizes most of the things that aren't talked about in pro sports.

It has pacing issues, but I do enjoy this film. There are a number of clichés that sports films find it difficult to avoid but AGS does a reasonable job in that respect. It helps that they focus as much on what is happening off the field as what happens on it, but the real meat and potatoes obviously lies in the games themselves and Stone does well to capture the drama of the sport in a number of tense extended sequences. The 'stinger' as the film ends also works well in this glossy sports tale

This film is so full of stereotypes and cliches I wouldn't even know where to begin; you've seen those characters and most of those scenes in, oh, so many other (sports) movies. However it still somehow manages to work alright, mostly because of a few well written pieces of dialogue and some good acting performances. I've heard some athletes, particularly from team sports, relate to many of the elements portrayed in this movie... so I guess some of those cliches might actually be real.

When watching a film based on the events of a sport team, theres is always a feeling that despite how enjoyable the opening two thirds are, it will inevitably disappoint, as the ending can only follow two routes, they're gonna win or they're gonna lose. Of course this film cannot conjure up any additional options but it provides an ending that is both inspiring to fit the awesome Pacino monologue without feeling like a forced happy ending. Gripping from start to the twist of a finish.

In one conversation between Pacino and Foxx, there are at least 30 - THIRTY! - rapid cuts to shots of clouds, lightning and I think a bird at one point. I'm just imagining Oliver Stone in a dark room looking at a screen quietly saying, "We need cumulus."

This movie could have been much better. Definitely not Oliver Stone's best work, but still entertaining. It actually gives a lot of insight to what really goes on in pro football and a lot of pro sports in general. P. Diddy was actually originally slated to play Jamie Foxx's role in this movie! Wow.

Oliver Stone doesn't concern himself with stories or subtext. He just presents a series of things happening in a particular subculture, and lets you bring your own hang-ups to the material. Sometimes, like in Any Given Sunday, it works.

Reviewing the director's cut here. The scene where a football player looses an eyeball is completely unnecessary and is such an unlikely happenstance that it detracts from the film. Admittedly it does flow better than the theatrical cut however there are still plenty of "music video moments" where footage is inter-cut that just doesn't add anything. In the latter half of the film this calms down and the film improves. It's a great look at professional sports, if admittedly cliche at points.

Stone tries to tackle the world of pro football from every angle and spreads himself too thin. The movie is over-long, has terrible pacing issues and an extremely trying first hour. But when it hits, it hits hard. Pacino is good as a coach at the end of his rope, and his pre-game speech about "inches" is one for the ages. Even better is Foxx, who does it all in this movie: he's fierce, funny and even wrote three songs for the soundtrack. The chapter-search button was built for movies like this.

You take the same ingredients, same cast, same script, and give it to ANYBODY(well not anybody) other than Oliver Stone, and this is the best football movie ever made. Still, Al Pacino, couldn't of asked for a better performance. Early glimpses of Foxx as well. Combative feelings in many scenes that did not relate, leaving questionable tones. "Football is violence. So eat violence!" The reoccurring "carnage" made me frown. Pretty good overall, I guess.

Sadly, a generally forgettable film. The only memorable moment is seeing Al Pacino play the role of an American football coach. Although the film is 150 minutes long, you never find yourself dozing out. That said, it could have been shorter, and the ending wasn't quite what I expected it to be. I also felt the director was trying a little too hard with regards to how certain scenes were shot. Acting - good. Directing - average. Story - decent. Movie as a whole? Alright.

Overly long piece on a sport I know nothing about. Not that it would matter - I enjoyed Pacino's restrained performance and I really liked how the film takes the structure of a war film and compares that with sports - Stone's politics are always interesting if not subtle. The film suffers from trying to put too many plots in - after an hour meandering as a quasi-ensemble piece the film starts to focus on comparing Pacino and Foxx's characters - but momentum has been lost and never picks up.

This was pretty much two hours of drugged out parties, locker room scenes, sportscenter clips, and shitty football action pieces. Stone has said the film was intended as a homage to Robert Aldrich, and it has as its subject the same aggressive, amoral masculinity and bonding of the two movies, _The Dirty Dozen_ and _The Longest Yard_, that inspired it. However, as I'm not American, I could not care less about American football

Spearheaded by a great cast, Stone's distinctive style works well during the football sequences and he's 'borrowed' a bunch of real life NFL anecdotes taken from various memoirs and biographies for good measure. Probably didn't need to run as long as it did but it's still a satisfying experience. Just remind youreself not to take it too seriously and enjoy the ride.

It's a real adrenaline blast in its editing, sound design and general film grammar. Definitely worth watching for that, if nothing else. Story is fine; nothing outstandingly special. Stone stopped being provocative with A.G.S, a rather conventional sports drama made when he still mattered. There is a critique of the general corporatisation of American sport, but it's not particularly forceful and mostly comes in the form of Pacino talking about old handshake deals and antiquated values of sportsmanship. The backroom drama is fairly standard, but the acting elevates it. Pacino is excellent as the aging coach, and Stone's flashy style keeps the adrenaline flowing freely.

A film that was ahead of it's time. The pacing and editing is more in tune with a 2020s crowd. The film tackles many issues still prevalent today: shoddy sports medicine, billionaire owners, the gladiatorial feelings of athletes, the weight of sports history, and even race. If you remember this film being terrible, give it another shot.

Enjoyed the overall theme of loving football despite brutal it is. However, the movie is overlong even after the director apparently cut out multiple characters from the film. There are so many subplots that few of them are fully fleshed out. It has a fun speech and lots of familiar faces from the NFL make an appearance. However, it ultimately does not earn its close to three hour runtime.
