Another addition to the already well-populated Japanese high school genre movie. Instead of aiming for bloody carnage or ghost stories, instead it's much more of a character-driven movie, examining the dynamics of adolescent boys' power disaffection and their struggles to prove themselves as the toughest/strongest/meanest/hardest/scariest in the school. Moments of existentialism are wonderfully done, as are some of the visual flourishes. A worthy effort by a director that needs to be watched.

Note this didn't work for me but many like it a lot.... ...in the land of losers the toughest loser is still.... a loser, which spoils it for me. Well done technically.

Liked how it presented existensialism, and that the violence was off-screen, as it was not (that) important to the story. Some real nutjobs there as well, the guy playing Yukio was brilliant.
