While this isn't really a bad little B western, it's not one that will make much of a contribution to race relations. To begin with, it casts Donna Reed as a young Mexican woman in love with Lundigan, which may be the least plausible casting imaginable. The Apaches are not just treated as a threat, but as a largely subhuman threat which really drags the movie down.

One thing I liked about the Apache Trail (1942) was Lloyd Nolan as the twitching nasty brother of the hero in the movie, William Lundigan. The rest was desperately underwritten in a very economic package. Come across lightweight regardless of it's ambition of doing something wider with an ensemble characters trapped together at the fort. The domino scene was a clever idea, but that was the exception in what was a easy western programmer from MGM.
