Francis Ford Coppola's masterful 1979 Vietnam War epic was previously expanded in 2001 into Apocalypse Now Redux by adding back 49 minutes of excised footage. This 2019 version of the film clocks in midway between the two prior releases by including just some of that added footage. In addition, the entire film has been remastered in 4K.

I've had nightmares with more coherence and less dread. What is compiled here is not a mess at all, but something akin to planets aligning for a singular moment of clarity - Divine reason rising amidst Chaos. I found myself marveling at multiple shots clearly unintentional, and yet, wholly Meant To Be. Each weigh stop (the French, the Concert) on this highway to Hell isn't a segue so much as a magnifying glass burning all of us good little soldier ants.

The remaster is absolutely gorgeous and a huge improvement on previous versions, especially with the daytime scenes. The edit, however, only proves further that Coppola got it right with the original cut. It’s better than the Redux, but he still keeps the ENTIRE plantation scene (at least as far as I could tell), which kills the pace as much as it ever did. I was honestly really disappointed that it wasn’t cut down more. However it’s still one of the best films ever etc

Godard in an interview with Dick Cavett said the problem with Apocalypse Now is that there was not enough money in the picture. If instead of 50 million, if he had spent 50 billion dollars then it would approach closer to what the American war in Vietnam was about.

Saw on IMAX, August 15Th, 2019, and I have to believe that really enhanced my perception and opinion of this film in a rather positive way. Had previously only seen it once, and that was back around 1997, and it was on a regular/small size Tv in Noel's apartment.

Overwhelming to experience this in 4K on IMAX -- I think I'm a shade closer to understanding what my father means when he says he came out of the theatre feeling shell shocked upon the original's release... And yes, I don't mind the plantation scene.

It is some 25 to 30 years since this viewer watched the original: its virtues seem clearer now, even if the third act is still obviously a product of production nightmares and confusion. More generally, the script problems seem less a question of Milius or his politics and more centred around the inanity of Herr's narration. Plantation scene does add worthwhile historical context, and the surrealistic portrayal of war as a kind of nihilistic quest is justified and successful. Looks very pretty.

I'm very miffed they cut the scene where Kurtz read the news reports, but it still stands the test of time as the best war movie ever made. Holy shit. Scenes are still effective, that plantation scene still sucks the life out of the pacing, but the succinct streamlining otherwise makes this cut a bit more...defining

Absolutely brilliant sensory experience on the big screen, but still the French Plantation scene bogs it down, why Coppola kept it in is beyond me. Original cut remains the best

The original release is far better. The whole section with the French was straight out of a different movie and completely messed up the rhythm and atmosphere.

ship of theseus sails down the river in vietnam. the big question here is that is it the same film if it stops at the french plantation?

A journey back and down(stream) into the depth of violence, from childish pursuit of victory in excitement, to bestial and bloodthirsty frenzy, to nihilism in defeat (which always means a loss of world), and to inhabitation in pure horror that, monstrously, bears transcendent violence as the origin of cult, from which, if we adopt Freud's myth, arose culture when the absolutely violent chief was killed and sacrificed. Shocking. Potent filming and music: first viewing at a cinema is essential.

Remove the French Plantation scene and this would probably be the ultimate cut.

Probably the best version of the film, Redux was definitely too long and unfocused. Definitely the best looking version of the movie.

Viewed in IMAX in a superb aural and visual restoration, it's clearer than ever what a flawed, sprawling masterwork this is. Duvall's hilariously unhinged Kilgore is difficult to top, until you hit the sheer awe inspiring movie-star aura of Brando in the closing scenes, an enigmatic figure for which the great man is perfectly cast. Now that it appears to be canon, the plantation sequence is a near disastrous misstep which throws the rhythm and message of the film seriously off-balance.

This movie feels like having some kind of a jungle fever. It pulls you in and doesn't let you go and the remaster is amazing. Brutal and beautiful.

Rather redundant new version, removing some unnecessary scenes from Redux, though keeping other unnecessary scenes. Yet, both Final Cut and Redux versions are still Apocalypse Now, one of the most monumental works in this medium, and these unnecessary scenes aren't boring or screw up the flow that bad anyway. Now, time for me to watch the five hour workprint version in horrendous quality and see if that has any unnecessary scenes.

Superior to Redux but still too long. Thankfully the inclusion of some ponderous scenes does not tarnish the greatness within.

On the one hand this feels a bit like a mess, like random scenes stuck together with a very loose and unbelievable plot and a protagonist that doesn't seem to undergo much character development. It is also quite emotionless. But on the other hand it is all quite enthralling. It totally absorbs you in the jungle atmosphere and it doesn't let go. Definitely a unique experience that is worth experiencing. Though I do think it could've been a lot better, if it had a better plot.
