For a film filled to the brim with blood and violence, there is a delicate framing to capture some immense beauty throughout. And the scenes without Dan Stevens aren't bad either.

Aims to tell a tale of madness and hysteria with powerful visual and sound design, but the horror and insanity are in fact undermined by the degree to which the movie revels in gruesome torture and violent action, which mainly just draw attention to the way the filmmakers have concocted the narrative so as to provide the opportunity to stage such scenes, while the performances are too one-dimensional, with a whole lot of angry shouting where there needed to be something wilder and more fervent.

Yet another in a long string of movies sporting weirdness and relatively high production values along side the meaningless moniker of "Netflix Original". This one has all the suffocatingly strange makings of a Lovecraft story. Nefarious religious cult, check, ancient and less than benevolent deity, check, main character in danger of losing sanity just as fast as his life, check. "Apostle" is a bizzare spectacle, it's good, but delivered with enough fat on it to avoid being called great.

A bloody inverted cross between Lovecraft, Silent Hill, and a dryad's vagina, Apostle is everything I never knew I wanted, but somehow knew the guy who made The Raid: Redemption would someday bring me.

Feels like a season of television condensed into a movie. Plot is painted in broad strokes and just about hangs together but feels like it's missing some necessary details to flesh it out. Characterisation especially suffers; the main character has about a page of dialogue over the course of the film (and it's a long film). Tone is weird too, morphs from subtly creepy period horror into a gory action film in the third act. Enjoyed it overall, just felt it was stretched a bit thin.

A bizarre hodgepodge of Lovecraftian Wicker Man torture-porn. Certainly unique and gripping, but a little too unfocused. Also it's painfully clear that there isn't much depth that went into the world-building. And that's the ultimate letdown, because the first act hinted at such an elaborate richness lurking under what at first glance looks to be a poor man's The Witch. In the end, the oncoming climax feels rushed and non-sensical, as if the slow-burn beginning sapped all their production funds.

An Englishman sails to a remote island where a bizarre religious cult has imprisoned his sister. A tantalizingly mysterious setup that devolves disappointingly into a fairly obvious and cliche tale about Gaia, the evil men who exploit her, and the restoration of faith. It's still exceptionally tense, bloody, and packed with wonderful moments of cinematography, but I feel like this could have been so much better story wise. Dan Stevens in the main role is also a little overact-y at times.

Sets up an intriguing if generic horror premise but continues to introduce new ideas to the point that all narrative coherence is diluted. Striking stylistic touches throughout but feels like 3 or 4 interesting yet tonally & thematically mismatched films fighting for screentime which reflects badly unto the performances as well (especially the lead). Engaging in its disjointed ambition but unfortunately what it boils down to is they tease a man being put through a meat grinder & fail to deliver.

No, you won't get The Raid level fighting although there are a few beatdowns that are pretty creative (and gruesome). In fact, Apostle will be known for how gruesome it is and if you're into gore then there's a lot to love here. Evans does a good job shaping a story around it that takes a few neat twists and turns. Shot well but doesn't create a memorable atmosphere (average). A little long but builds up mystery pretty well until it explodes into unapologetic violence and craziness.

Pretty compelling to start with, then gets bogged down in the middle before going in a different direction with lots of crazy violence. Some of the bursts of "bad ass" ultraviolence feel shoe-horned in, like Evans needs to maintain his "brand" even while directing a period rural-horror movie. And yet this is still better than the average Netflix original movie.

I liked this movie but it's too long. Not like the pacing is bad kind of too long but for its length it was just missing something and not as good as I feel it should have been. Gareth Evans has a good eye and can shoot a damn movie, but I think needs a little help in the script department. Dan Stevens is great

I'm surprised by the low scores for this. Good story and beautifully shot. Also, I think they picked the wrong Gareth to direct that one Star Wars movie.

The first half is mostly drama that rarely builds tension. But the payoff of the second half makes it worth sitting through. As someone who has no problem sitting through slow burn movies, caution to those that may struggle, as it really does drag at first. It’s also not for the squeamish either. The setting is so intriguing for a horror film, somewhat reminiscent of The Witch (which it doesn’t quite stack up to). You can probably decide if this is for you or not.

I was expecting something Wicker-Man-esque from the trailer, and there is a bit of that here, but in actuality I was reminded more of Silent Hill, or certain Resident Evil games. I felt like the plot meandered a little, but was overall good. The score especially stood out as a big positive to me.

Evans delivers with his brand of shocking violence, but much of the film that leads up to this is a tad too much of the religious-zealot-yelling type of genre. The slow burn, arresting score, and quite beautiful photography are all enough to push this odd little film into something worth recommending.

varoluşçu nihilizm vs. müesses nizam vs. sağ popülizm diye çerçevelemek dahi filmin görsel ve işitsel yetisiyle senaryosunun oluşturduğu tezattan daha anlamlı bir bütün sağlıyor kendisine. bir de "kült film yapmak" diye bir olay çıktı gerçekten, film kült olur da kült film nasıl yapılıyor? filmi gal western'i diye niteleyip daha çok tarz görünme iştahını tatmin eden *her şeyden biraz* sendromuyla mı?

Great camera work as usual with Gareth but I was seeing that one thinking that it was a Horror movie, maybe that thing did not let me enjoy it more. Outstanding production, though. I do not know if it was in-character—I assume it was—but the acting of Stevens was kind of eccentric and weird.

So slow-burning, it really threw me off of the kind of film I was watching. But then the payoff is gruesome and elaborate enough to make one forget the film's "period drama" beginnings. It's not a great script, but everything Gareth Evans touches is unflinchingly visceral, and Dan Stevens is remarkable in the lead.

Gareth evans impressively undermines that he can only direct scenes where people cave each others skulls in. Aside from neat set design, i really can't find anything but dropped plot threads, logical and formal flaws, contradictions and bad editing decisions. Which is too bad. Because i like films that don't have those things.

Didn't care for this at all. Predictable plot developments amid padded scenes and torture-porn violence and gore. A good performance from Sheen does not make up for the fact that this film seems to have no interest in making you care about the fate of any of these characters, which makes the gore nothing more than spectacle. It's at least half an hour too long and not nearly as artistic as it wants to be.

This movie started off quite pleased with itself setting up a mysterious story, but half-way through started to ask me if I could help it out. I explained that it should have had everything ready before it started shooting but it didn't appear to understand. Finally, it showed me one of the endings it was working on. I said it didn't make much sense but it was too late now to come up with anything else. I don't dislike it - I just feel a bit sorry for it, the confused thing.

The enchantingly off-putting, creeping dread atmosphere of the first half, combined with the stunning, forbidding island setting, is so well done that it is a shame the second half falls to pieces; the slow-burn tension fizzes out, and the progression of the religious sects “traditions” are arbitrary and disconnected from Stevens, turning him in to a passive narrator, rather than necessary to the story progression. Well-performed by all and not without interest, but rates as a near-miss.

Apostle has a few standout features (like the music), but overall I found it quite disappointing. It presents itself as a slow-burning mystery horror movie, but by the end, the slow pace doesn't pay off, the mystery fizzles into nothingness, and Stevens' character comes away without any kind of arc. On top of that, it isn't scary once. Too many moments were cliched and predictable. Call me a cynic, but reading that this is a Netflix original made a lot of things fall into place.

Apostle is a very strange movie. I liked it quite a bit but with some of the longer cuts it seemed to drag a bit. The plot was very cool. I like the turn of the century story about a strange religious cult that is trying to survive just off the coast in England. The crux of the story is that the cult members are running from taxes and non-believers but the true reason the cult has developed is much more sinister. It starts out slow but really heats up. I'd watch it again.

A two hour film. First hour and 45 minutes you'll be dandy, but if you are of weaker constitution of the stomach, keep your eyes closed during the last 15 minutes. Body parts will be severed, crushed, mushed, drilled and burned. It's a slow burn what comes to horror. Actually, I would not even call this a horror. It's a thriller mystery with a hint of supernatural. Still pretty good tho.

After director Gareth Evans setting sky high expectations with the "Safe Haven" segment of VHS 2, and Dan Stevens being the best part of everything I've seen him in so far, this was a major disappointment. Stevens overacts to the point of distraction (he should have immediately been caught out by the cult for glowering at everyone), and the film in general is a total mess with little in the way of either terror or horror. Even the two climactic gore scenes just kind of happen in a vacuum.

A lot of different horror elements put together, sometimes too superficially, so while some was fun, it could be confusing at times. It felt more like an horror miniserie as it felt long and the pace was uneven, with many "high" then no resolution but more mysteries. Interesting and entertaining but not perfect

Massive fan of most of Gareth Evans work so finally got around to seeing this one tonight. I don't get scared by movies often, and this didn't scare me but it is effectively creepy and unsettling throughout. Evans does a very good job at setting the scene and turning up the holy shit meter when he wants to. Unexpectedly great second half. I love the bonkers nature of it all. Great style points as well as the musical score. 7.7, maybe higher on a second watch.
