"Lemon. Sometimes the way back up is down. Let me tell you a story. It's 1994. I went ice climbing, and I fell into a crevasse. I hurt my leg, and I couldn't climb back up. So fighting every natural instinct, doing the thing that seemed most awful to me, I climbed down into the darkness. And that's how I got out. When I got back to base camp, I went and found my fellow climber, the one who had cut me loose after I fell. And I said, ''Connie Chung, you did the right thing.''

While Mads Mikkelsen's performance is pretty phenomenal, "Arctic" is a small film in a big landscape, it's one that's been done before, and better. As a first time writer/director Penna certainly impressed me, but we'll have to see if it holds up when he needs to write more than half a dozen lines of dialog.

Passable survival film about Hannibal Lecter heroically battling his desire for human flesh.

Even at death's grip, survival could never be completely selfish. The human nature to care for one another, comes with a much deeper incentive than to not be alone. As Mother Nature flows from its severe extremities into a beautiful character, we see that man cannot continue on without Her. There are many moments that heighten the relationship, thanks to the wicked combo of Icelandic scenery and Mads' stellar performance. Simple, and well kept.

Pretty bleak survival movie with some good moments. Certainly not the best, and the ending was disappointing too. Mikkelsen was good though.

Arduous, to say the least. I am a Mads Mikkelsen fan, so watching him brave the cold is enough to keep me entertained. It isn't anything new, but watching someone get the shit kicked out of him by nature is great.

Dang. I wanted to write something witty about this, but the more I watched, the more I realized that Mads Mikkelsen is having such rotten luck in this, that I just can't bring myself to make fun of him. It's like Gravity, but in a frigid wasteland instead of outer space.

Much like 'All is Lost' this is storytelling in its simplest form. Will or won't man survive a battle against the elements. I quite like these kinds of movies, partly because of the MacGyveresque ingenuity of our protagonist, but here I was also captivated by the quiet stoic refusal to surrender man's empathetic essence to nature. It will stay with me for a while, as will the ending, somehow pitch perfect for me.

A new look for the somewhat popular survival genre, though isn't adding any new psychological insight (the humour of The Martian) or any cinematic grandiosity (Gravity). It's an arduous and ho-hum slog, but still at times engages with its simplicity and its location authenticity. Who woulda thought a YouTuber would've debuted with a film like this? Still hoped for more

Man tries to reach a safe haven in endless snow. Surrounded by beautiful landscapes, Mads Mikkelsen fights loneliness, the elements and his own humanity. Intense and emotional tour-de-force.

It helps that Mikkelsen is leading this, he's just a great, natural actor. The movie starts well but towards the end it gets more and more unrealistic and rather disappointing. I could fully immerse myself but got that sour taste in my mouth... But it's extreme weather and isolation movie, so it's got that going for it. Would not re-watch.

It's tough to overcome the bleakness of the film, for long stretches you are simply reminded of the nothingness. That being said Mikkelsen is his solid self and its cinematography does the grim beauty justice. If you like survival stories this one is decent.

I realise I am a "survival" film junkie. Arctic (despite Iceland not being in the arctic) played on 'real' human emotions of needing someone, of not being alone, of caring for someone who tried to help you, of giving you a "purpose" to survive. Mads was superb in this, and his struggles against sheer exhaustion and frostbite were heartbreaking to watch. The ending was brilliant; this story is solely about what he was willing to do in order to keep himself and his charge alive against the odds.

Mikkelsen is nothing short of mesmerizing in this role! The movie itself does a good job of establishing just how bleak and against the odds his survival is, but the core of the story comes from his drive to not only save himself, but his semi-conscious fellow survivor. A much more restrained and quiet survival film, but one that's definitely a worthy addition to the genre.

LOVED this movie and Mikkelsen's performance was Oscar-worthy! You felt his pain, cold, frustration and loneliness. Overall, a great story of the power of the human will and never giving up hope.

(SPOILERS) Very straightforward without a lot of finer points to chew on. Most survival films get by on being a contrarian kind of anti-cinema full of long takes, silences, anticlimaxes, etc. and this is no exception. The ending functions similarly to All Is Lost, giving the characters a (probably figurative/illusory) nick-of-time rescue/salvation for their perseverance.

Spoilers. This was great except one thing was off to me. The man is starving and finds a styrofoam cup of ramen. He rips off the lid then dumps the noodles in his hand. When he does, all the loose bits (corn, etc.) spill on the floor. Someone facing starvation would be careful to not spill. He even drops some as he takes a bite. Every calorie counts. His character was so practical and smart I can't believe he would be so careless and dumb.

Hardly the first or most unique movie of its kind, but still very damn compelling stuff. I've had a hard time lately staying awake for movies that had a lot more going on... for this, I didn't even blink. It's kind of heartbreaking, though. A great (if self-conscious) metaphor for the struggle of life we all face.

I'm not a big survivalist film fan so any movie in the genre needs to do something special to make me think it's more than pretty good. This doesn't accomplish that, but I'll give it credit: Mads was great, it captured the loneliness well, it was shot well, the music was fitting. There were some great scenes, but as someone else said, the last 10 seconds or so kind of ruins the ending.
