How is it that Rameau's music--almost the earliest of the excerpts, chronologically--sounds the freshest and most modern of all? Altman's sequence to it has a pleasant, wacky perversity. Godard's girls lusting after bodybuilders to Lully's "Armide" is sort of fun, though I hate how the music jumps around. Ken Russell is normally a genius at wedding music to visual imagery... this is, shall we say, not one of his best efforts.
