Bruce Campbell stars as Ash, a hapless housewares clerk time-warped back to the Dark Ages by the demonic power of the Necronomicon. Now armed with only a '73 Oldsmobile, his trusty chainsaw and a 12-gauge double-barreled S-Mart shotgun, our knuckleheaded hero must battle vicious she-bitches, a diabolical Evil Ash and the relentless hordes of the medieval dead.

As a kid, I remember seeing this on cable and instantly being drawn to how ridiculous it looked. I think it was during the scene where the skeletons were storming the castle. It looked so cheesy yet...alluring? When we think of Ash, this film's Ash is what we think about.

This movie is awesome! Taking the lead character back in time to see an EARLY Evil Dead was cleverly done. While it doesn’t go for loads or blood and gore like it’s predecessors, it has the exact same tone as the previous movie and I would argue that this was Campbell’s best performance as Ash. While a lot of the effects are still purposefully bad, a lot of them are surprisingly great, particularly the production design and practical effects. An oddball in the series, but a great one!

Besides Labyrinth, this is the movie I've watched most growing up. It's such a fantastic blend of gory, funny, goofy, quoteworthy and cool(y?) that it will probably be eternally rewatchable for me. This rating is totally subjective and I don't give a damn. 5 out of 5 blood-fountains from deathpits containing bonusmonsters. I wish I was wearing my S-Mart shirt while typing this. "It's a trick, get an axe". Campbell rules. EvilAsh rules. Skeleton army rules. I'm rambling now. I don't care! Groovy.

In some way or form, this is viewed as the finale in the Evil Dead trilogy, and while it's ties are few and far between, it plays on so many tropes from the first 2. It's incrdibly goofy from the start, and Bruce Campbell is still a bad ass, and it still has Sam Raimi finger prints all over it with the absurd dark humor and purposely bad affects. It's really hard to have a bad time with this. You've got to give it credit for switching it up, even if it's not quite Evil Dead status.

I have a soft spot for Bruce Campbell. A lot of this movie isn't really worth much beyond the action and explosions, but I love pretty much every stupid line of Campbell's dialogue. Raimi does a few interesting things with the camera as we go along and the story is fun enough, but it's only Bruce Campbell that makes this worth watching.

Beats FRIDAY THE 13TH in terms of "how the hell did we get here?" when comparing the first episode of a franchise to the last - while "Yo, She-Bitch" is an easy laugh, it can't compensate for nearly 90 minutes of overstated, campy nonsense around it which seems to be striving (too hard) for cult status, again hampered by Campbell's absurdly over-exaggerated emoting - perhaps the point is you are supposed to enjoy this ironically, but there's just too much irony here for this viewer!

It relies heavily on Campbell's charisma like the second one (and to a lesser extent the first) did, but that's fine because he's awesome. This is even less of a horror than Evil Dead 2, leaning way more into over the top action. I love how silly the franchise got, moving from a great horror flick to a medieval action movie. Lots of wonderful one-liners, fun action, inventiveness. Almost on par with Evil Dead 2, but so bonkers it's a must-watch.

The third film in "The Evil Dead" series is the campiest of the bunch. Bruce Campbell's performance in the most comedic film of the series produced the most quotable "Ash", and my childhood favorite. "Hail to the King, baby; This is my...BOOMSTICK" however, now as an overall movie this one doesn't seem to hold up as well by comparison. Although still plenty entertaining, personal preference now favors the more "serious" splatter horror/comedy over the more comedy/horror-fantasy/adventure here.

Pretty absurd sequel to evil dead 2 that I saw twice in the theater when it came out. It's basically a supercharged Sam Raimi film and completely over the top ridiculous fun. You literally have to turn your brain off and not analyze why the skeletons make one line quips before getting blown up and why Ash is such a cult figure in spite of (or because of?) being a total jackass. If you enjoy intentional B-movie camp, the undead, and lots of cheesy one liners then Army of Darkness is for you.

It's imaginative, and Raimi's style is fun and unique, but my praise ends there... The film is childish, poorly paced and way too self aware. The final act of the film is so lengthy and poorly lit that it lost my attention several times. On top of that, Ash has gone from likeable to obnoxious.

This one still kicks ass. The skeleton army is delightful, and for me this is where Ash becomes a consistently great character - fish out of water with a chip on his shoulder. The frustration of a man deprived of two girlfriends and his right hand. The one let down I had was that the chainsaw inexplicably disappeared after ten minutes. It's only in the first scene! Seems like wasted potential.

Viewed September 14, 2021. The series' third entry expands the palette a bit by moving the action to medieval times and by completing Ash's transformation into an arrogant, picturesque, one-liner-spouting action hero. The latter is especially effective, as so many of the best gags here spring from the way Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell set up Ash's heroic bonafides and then promptly tear down that same image.

The third Evil Dead film basically eschews the horror and the gore for a (comparatively way more accessible) full-blown, eccentric type of goth-comic-book fantasy. The 1300 A.D. setting did feel a little dysfunctional and I did miss the horror element but, if you can accept the tonal difference, you'll probably have a good time and appreciate this for what it is: a minor but enjoyable medieval take on Evil Dead with beautiful imagery and a thrilling, full-on battle against the Army of Darkness.

Raimi/Campbell clearly had more commercial aspirations with this installment, but it's so friggin' bonkers that it's bizarre to think they actually believed it stood a chance of being a hit. Drawing more heavily on his childhood influences, Raimi pulls out all the stops, creating a deliriously over the top horror-comedy with an eccentric streak a mile wide. Campbell's gonzo performance cemented his status as b-movie legend, while the stop motion skeleton army pays loving tribute to Harryhausen.

Officially part 3 in the wild and wacky Evil Dead trilogy. Bruce Campbell, returns as Ash (hero of the first two Evil Dead flicks), a hardware-store clerk who is magically transported--along with his beat-up Oldsmobile and a chainsaw attachment for his severed left forearm--to the brutal battlefields of the 14th century. He quickly assumes power (who else in the Middle Ages packs a shotgun and a chainsaw?), and unites his band of medieval knights against the dreaded Army of the Dead.

This is my boomstick! There are so many great one-liners here. It is a fitting introduction into whatever you call the horror comedy hybrid that Sam Raimi loves to unleash. Well, they went for the PG-masses with this one, splatterless reshoots of part 2 included. It's great to see what raimi can do with more budget, but the result is comparatively streamlined, digestible and comedic, with lots of slapstick and self-parody that doesn't always hit the mark. And there's definitely NOT enough chainsaw in this! Evil ash is a neat antagonist, though, and it's just too much of a fun time to whip up any valid criticism here.

Reminding me of a combination of The Princess Bride (the cheezy hero), Monty Python (the witty humor), Lord of the Rings (the battle for Helm's Deep) and Planet Terror (the ridiculous slashing), Army of Darkness failed to impress me. While hilarious at times, the film failed to grasp my attention, the SFX looked extremely dated (granted, it's a B-movie), and even though it's only 85 mins long, I yawned all the way through. Take _Evil Dead II_, extract most of the horror, and cross it with a Three Stooges version of _A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court_, and it comes out like this. Ambitious but frustrating. Truckloads of not-so-subtle homages are paid to everything from _The Day the Earth Stood Still_ to _The Manster_. Starts off great w/ Ash thrown into a completely new setup where humans are bad news too, the first thing you notice (esp in the night scenes) is how much better cinematography looks when a Hollywood budget's funding things. Ash's intentionally absurd comebacks also works well at first, as do the familiar but fun variations on Ash-gets-the-sht-kicked-of-him scenes . Once the Deadite army is raised though it all becomes too predictable even if Raimi has alot of energy & inventiveness to burn.

In a way, it's the least accomplished of the three films, largely because it's the most ambitious. It clearly struggles at the constraint of a budget that won't allow it to do what it really wants. Still, being the least of this trilogy still amounts to a lot. It's a ridiculously fun film with great supporting performances from Embeth Davidtz and Bill Moseley.
