As a translator by profession, I can tell you right now that stuff that rhymes in one language, usually doesn't in another...so when experts in ancient Cimmerian or whatever arcane lexicon start doing on-the-spot translations of millenia-year old tablets and the resulting English is in perfect limerick form, either the whole thing's BS or the character's an undercover leprechaun for MI6. What I didn't learn from this movie: how a single horror movie can have so many survivors at the end.

The Blair Witch Project with a Lara Croft/Tomb Raider style heroine and sensibility. Several intense life-or-death sequences, some cool soundscapes by Max Richter, and a claustrophobic setting makes this a fun theater experience. I DIG IT. It's pretty silly, though. SPOILERS: I wanted them to go deeper into hell. I wanted them to meet SATAN.

With a bit more focus and control, particularly towards the end, this could’ve been a lot better. That said, it’s an effective enough premise, which benefits from a decent cast and the underground setting. Some of it is a bit hokey, but it doesn’t really harm it. It just seems to lose a bit of focus as it goes on, and perhaps doesn’t fully capitalise on some of the good ideas that were planted early on. Some good scares and atmosphere throughout make it worth a watch.

A mix of The Da Vinci Code, Indiana Jones, Grave Encounters, and The Descent, blended into a modern symbolic journey into the underworld. It may appeal to a limited audience, given the diverse style (and quality) of those influences, but something about the nerdy history buff turned treasure hunter idea still has the power to intrigue. Blending that with elements of horror, psychological thriller, and mythology results in an oddly appealing harmony of scares and exploration of the human spirit.

Tomb Raider meets the Blair Witch. The film had a mildly promising start, with Perdita Weeks as a charismatic posh adventurer girl. Setting it in the Paris catacombs was also a decent choice. But once things got going, it quickly settled into the usual stereotypical genre tropes - fumbles in the dark, large group of disposable minor characters. Reminiscent of The Descent, but weaker characters. Most of the supernatural horror stuff was mind-numbingly nonsensical. Lost my interest real fast.

As modern found-footage flicks tend to do, As Above runs at a wonderfully creepy clip until the filmmakers realize they have to have a second act, where it quickly becomes a shitty Elder Scrolls quest. Even so, found-footage is really hard to get right, and I appreciate any movie that seems to actually try.

Genuinely interesting premise and ideas, especially once you understand it's a Dante's Inferno metaphor, and filming in the Parisian catacombs gives it all kinds of claustrophobic spookiness. Unfortunately the film is filled with ineffective modern horror cliches and boring characters, which often ruins the mood. The marketing team at least did their job and provided a memorable poster.

As Above, So Below has so much interesting in its runtime that I would almost love to see more of the world and see other kinds of people walk into these catacombs. That being said, this movie didn't seem to explore the fun of those topics. Instead it started to go into a strange, way too supernatural route in the half an hour that kind of killed the vibe. It was good, with some alright and acting, and good directing, but the all-overness was a bit too jarring.

The found footage gimmick doesn't really work in this movie, but I'm a fan of the style generally. I give horror movies that aren't just about haunted houses more recognition than maybe I should because I'm so sick of those types. I give props to this because at least it's different with a cool setting and some intrigue. It doesn't reach its potential and loses some steam once it becomes very obvious which direction this is going. It's still a good time with some good scares and claustrophobia.

Starts out pretty solid and does some genuinely creepy things but then falls into the catacombic pit of jump scare cliches at key moments and does the thing where the crisis ends but there is no reflection. Like yeah they got out but is it real Paris? Does the protagonist just have magic powers from now on? Where's the closure? None, because the writers ran out of pizza and decided to end the movie.

Interesting concept and backstory which falls into the trappings of too many horror cliches (a piano and a ringing telephone in the catacombs, really?!). What makes this a worthwhile viewing experience is the unique and claustrophobic setting, which under the right script and direction should have made for a highly atmospheric and terrifying film.

A mashup of a bunch of horror titles leads to a reasonably cool ride into the underworld. The feeling of claustrophobia is its strongest suit and there's some neat visuals in between all the screaming and running. I had a good laugh whenever translations of ancient languages turned into neatly rhyming English text though.

It was going pretty good up until that god awful ending which took away the suspense, creepy atmosphere and just left me feeling nauseated. If you turn this movie off at the car scene near the end it will be a lot better for you because seriously THE ENDING IS SO BAD.

It's strongest in its second act where the claustrophobia sinks in and we start getting a sense of who these characters are. It becomes laughable in the final act when it suddenly becomes a Spooky World walk through with ghouls breaking out of walls and nonsense coming at you from every direction. Fantastic final shot though.

As Above, So Below is a thrilling movie that keeps the heart rate up for the vast majority of its running time, which is something most horror/thriller films are unable to say. It's got a constant stream of suspense, does enough to separate itself from other found footage movies, and offers more than a couple of surprises. It might remind some viewers too much of The Descent, but it's a different movie and perhaps a smarter movie, too. I had lots of fun with it.

A fun spirit of adventure with some good moments of tension and intrigue kept me engaged. Doesnt take itself too seriously and has some likeable-enough characters. Could've been better but hey, it didn't piss me off or make me regret watching. Which is nothing to scoff at when it comes to contemporary horror of this production scale, target audience and distribution reach. *cough* pretty much everything from Blumhouse this year *cough*

While not the best movie ever the atmosphere was really good as was the use of the location. The actors/characters were pretty much found footage stereotypes. Some of the effects worked and some didn't but it kept a pretty creepy vibe going towards the end. The craziest thing about this movie is how it ends. Overall I'd have to say that I enjoyed it.

If you like watching a bunch of annoying people walking around in the dark with hand held cameras where nothing happens for an hour then this is the film for you.Once the scares finally turn up there is just a lot of shouting & screaming but you can never really tell whats happening. People may think this adds to the drama and enhances the feeling of claustrophobia but I didn't feel anything for the characters or the story. Its a bit of a mess and sticks to the usual horror clichés.

A seriously eerie horror movie that begins as a barely interesting thriller, but about halfway through introduces some crazy bizarre scenes and imagery. It turns out that dowdle can write some solidly scary crap, but it simply takes too long to bust out of the template of your average shaky cam jump scare horror cocoon.

SPOILER. A fun ride with a terrible ending. You get feeling you are witnissing a foolish but scary descent into hell which would have allowed filmmakers to go completely batshit insane. I was hoping for it, I wanted to see the protagonists entering eternal fire and suffering... but no; suddenly everything was OK again, just tell your dead dad you are sorry. Damn it.

(Possible Spoilers) I 'enjoyed' the claustrophobic bits, I felt genuine panic while watching which I'm not going to deny. A few of the jumpscares got me but the person I watched it with was genuinely scared by the atmosphere of the movie which I will say it pulled off very well in parts. My gripe with the movie was its predictability. Aside from the hellscape we're presented, the narrative getting us there was rather dull, I didn't really care about any of the characters. good atmosphere though.

Fairly bland and expository-ish until the last forty minutes or so, at which point insanity happens, ghosts start appearing, people start dying gory deaths, etc. Worth a cheap rental just for that sustained berserk climax, but file this one alongside AFFLICTED, OCULUS and (maybe) THE SIGNAL as another watchable, relatively cool horror flick that doesn't quite have enough worthwhile stuff for 90 full minutes.

Instead we're given a shaky-camera, headache-inducing found-footage chase that heads down, down and forever down into the dank and the dark of the bone-strewn catacombs. There our "heroes" wrestle with vague, soul-encumbering personal guilt while hellish entities gnaw on their necks and crack open their skulls. As Above/So Below is unnecessarily profane, populated by albino-skinned dead reaching from pools of blood ... and destined for a second slow death on Netflix. (pluggedin.com)

As Above, So Below is ironically very much it’s title. It has some really interesting ideas, as well as some incredibly low execution. Exploring some of the ideology of the Paris Catacombs and it’s heavy focus on claustrophobia and the sheer idea of becoming stuck underground is interesting, even some of the supernatural elements are fine, but they really take it so far into that direction that it actually subtracts from realism it was going for, and it kinda ends up a mixed bag.

Does an excellent job of conveying the isolating disconnection from safety as these people descend deeper and deeper and deeper. The sense of adventure, danger and claustrophobia is real. Sure there's some silliness, but I applaud the film for taking us away from the more typical found footage settings (woods, old houses, etc) and putting us somewhere utterly foreign and unpredictable. The film earns its scares, creating an effectively creepy journey and a satisfying payoff.

There were actually a few good ideas here, like the concept of the dizzying descent/ascent symmetry, but all the genre's usual pitfalls are here - the over-explanation, the half-assed exoticism, the crudely drawn characters and their tacked-on guilt issues, and every cliche in the book of "scares". As-is it's just another underground "found footage" chiller a-la The Tunnel Movie and The Descent.

A complete cop-out that SPOILERS: they don't find hell. What's all the foreshadowing for? What's all the killing for? Anyway, cool set design and atmosphere for a good amount of it. Didn't care at all about the character catharsis. I liked the british gal. And that crazy dude from Mad Men/caffeinated lawyer from Silicon Valley shows up in something else. The most horrific aspect of this are the moments of claustrophobic terror which far outstrip the supernatural ones (one key sequence is unwatchable in the best way if you have any sensitivities in this area *shudder*). Otherwise this is an effective “haunted house” horror, which can’t quite match the feverish intensity of THE DESCENT - marred somewhat by a convoluted build-up, and a redundant “found footage” conceit that only makes it difficult to follow what’s going on at times.

The filmmakers like to make metaphorical films, so the setting is never about the setting but the maturation of the characters. This literary approach leads to thought-provoking meditations but often makes baffling films at first glance. This hybrid between "Alphaville" and "Indiana Jones" goes interesting places but leaves us with only unsettling throughts and action that is more torture than a smooth flow from one idea to another. However it lingers with you.

It was entertaining, though if you are looking for a hyper intelligent narrative, eh, its super simple basic concept given window dressing to appear deeper than it is, But even smart curtains can improve on a simple window, if that makes sense. there are some dumb parts i wont give away since plot, but overall....... its enjoyable. Yeah couldn't watch this. The camera work in the opening was seriously making me motion sick. Honestly there are only a couple of these found footage movies that I can stomach, Quarantine/REC, The Visit, and the one with the dementia woman. The worse part was when the charactercter started acting as though she was doing a sort of documentary after title card and yet didn't hire someone who was competant at filming. They shouldn't be perfect but camera shouldn't sway every second

First thirty minutes are filled with pointless "introduction" as all movies in this genre has. Then a promising atmosphere starts to build up slowly but whole story runs by stupidity of characters. The black guy asking "who's there" instead of following his friends after hearing a voice and so on. Cheap jumpscares and a "hell" consisting of 3 demons who does nothing. In the end, they enter paris again but from underground and that's all. A movie which goes on for 100 minutes and tells nothing.

As Above, So Below isn't believable in the slightest as found footage, and honestly, the movie as a whole might have been better off ditching that angle entirely. Even setting aside that a found-footage horror film can't NOT be influenced by The Blair Witch Project, this one is especially so, given the quest of the leads to explore a myth, and even details like traveling in a circle after they thought they were going in a straight line. Very, very claustrophobic film - I prefer this as a setting to the woods - though it lacks that film's tense social dissolution. Still, damn fine haunted house shit.

A fantastic build up, with main characters with MULTIPLE LAYERS TO THEM is ruined by a by the books kill fest of a third act. The story treats its viewers as smart and have callbacks to the beginning of the movie that a character doesn't explicitly have to state. Sadly, the complex characters just becomes characters to up the death count come the end of the movie. A better third act and this would have been up for best horror film of 2014

Investigating the Parisian catacombs didn't appeal to me. But I actually found that the setting added a decently claustrophic atmosphere to the film, allowing sequences lower on horror to draw - successfully - on the tropes of the adventure thriller. In the film's final act, things get a little too ridiculous for the intensity to be maintained (though I am a fan of the very final moments, a choice I completely approved of). Yet for the most part I found this creepy and appropriately distressing.
