Difficult film to take. A Shakespearian play done like it was for the stage. All to increase the profile of exiled actress Elisabeth Bergner as a serious English speaking star. But both the story and way it was acted made it more awkward then pleasant to watch. Felt like a prestige project with nice sets and everything done to get Bergner over with the movie fans, but the the way it was packaged took away from it's main purpose. Plus it was impossible to believe they thinking Bergner was a boy.

An incredibly poor adaptation, suffering from stuffy halloween costumes and some of the most hilariously bad Shakespearean acting I've ever seen (sans Olivier, natch). More of note than the film itself is the talent: David Lean did his best to edit the thing, and Jack Cardiff cut his chops as cinematographer.
