Sometimes movies that contain no nudity whatsoever are made to be played after 11pm and there's nothing wrong with that.

I was actually prepared to give this a decent review, but something about it didn't sit well with me. The original treated the prisoners like human beings, and you genuinely felt like shit when one of them went down. In this remake, it's pretty fucking obvious who the director wants us to care more about. Black female prisoner die? Fuck it, show it in real time from 40 feet away. White psychologist die? Falling snow, doves, slow motion, and sad piano music. Bad politics.

Though I was down enough for the ride to stay engaged the whole way through, it didn't have a lot going for it other than constant bursts of action. I didn't realize it was based on a book or that it was a remake 30 years in the making, but good lord, I don't think I've ever seen a more insultingly obvious plot twist. It's hinted at half a dozen times in super obvious, hamfisted fashion. The final shot (which is bad) is held for so long that it seems like a glitch. I dunno why I enjoyed this...

Not that the original needed a remake, this was well done, some great acting talent, intense and action-packed.

It's like they watched The Rock instead of the original, stole the concept and half-assed that villains' character development. The Ja Rule rap song over the credits is so bad it's good (only to laugh at).

Fine action film never really emerges as anything but a stylish genre piece; Fishburne and Hawke make an excellent team, and director Richet indulges in flashy camera angles, very much reminiscent of John Carpenter (director of the 70s original). A solid dose of entertainment.

Richet's direction keeps the action plentiful and stylish, while the very capable cast do make this leaden plot seem better than it is. Sadly, that's not really enough to elevate this pedestrian rehash into anything more than a passable escapist popcorn flick, as easy to watch as it is easy to forget.

This movie was foul. Plot, characters and especially dialogue were all unbearable. In an attempt to be really edgy and intense it is simply over the top and poorly done. Some of the action is cool, but this movie shouldn't ever be more than something you glance at because it's playing at a party. Crap!

Quite a lame movie. The dialogues are quite ridiculous, and the story.. Some things just aren't right, don't fit.. If you don't see the movie, you don't miss anything either.

Not a particularly fresh take on the original. It's hard to root for the characters and there are a lot of narrative choices that just feel off. One thing that I did find distracting is that, during the eponymous assault, as primary characters start to be eliminated, it seems as though each of their deaths are depicted the exact same way. It always bothered me.

Great concept ruined by the usual popcorn movie formula. The rappers and Leguizamo really drag this down, but what really hurt the film were the unnecessary twists and shocks. Despite all that, this might be one of my favorite Fishburne performances.

Better than I remember it as having been. Some good action sequences, beautiful visuals- lots of ice and swirling snow, black and blue hues. Acting runs the gamut from good (Bello) to bad (Fishburne) to awful (Leguizamo). Leguizamo is particularly obnoxious, and none of the characters are as engaging as those in Carpenter's original. Doesn't measure up to Carpenter's version, but it isn't bad.
