Asterix and Obelix: Mission Cleopatra

It tries. Oh lordies does it try. It's there in your face trying and trying and you just want to say "give up you'll never amount to anything" just for the cruel satisfaction of destroying the hopes and dreams of all who tried to make this film adaptation work.

Has to be watched in french.

Sure, it's silly. It's a kid movie in spite of going for nostalgia. But it's also well made and has variety of scenes and action. I was not a fan of Debouze, but most other egyptian characters had fun absurd humour going on for them. They added scenes from the comic or animated movie, but otherwise stuck well with the classic, and the additions were not too bad. What impressed me the most were the sets and costumes: beautiful and vibrant, huge but detailed, great work on those.

They don't take themselves serious and obviously had fun doing it.

It's amazing with the Polish dubbing.

Mission Cleopatra is an underwhelming experience that offers snippets of fun buried in an overlong film. There's the minor issue of the sound editing which has an Italian quality, whereby half the dialogue (in French) feels like it has been re-recorded & dubbed over. The film is also constantly cheapened by the continual use of contemporary film motifs or an obvious pop song. Ultimately, by taking the Gaulois out of Gaul, the film loses its provincial charm even if it still makes the same jokes.
