The inmates at an asylum for the criminally insane riot and kill all the guards during a power outage, leaving a group of slacker cooks to fend for themselves amidst the chaos. A decent flick with a greasy, creepy atmosphere and plenty of carnage, plus an unexpected ending that made me second guess everything I thought about the movie. I like when that happens.

A fine and solid directing, excellent editing and sound world. Good characters. Rupert Evans and Richard Brake acted excellent together, but all in vain. There was no story what so ever.

A slow burn horror/thriller that starts off "normal" enough in that uneasy kind of way. The main characters lead well done, most of the other characters are pretty one dimensional and basic. The music and pacing were well done most of the time but towards the end it started to drag a bit. The ending was interesting but there wasn't enough to do more than confuse things. S. Craig Zahler's screenplays really work for me.

Watched for Zahler's script, which he wrote way back in 1995. It's a bit slight despite a solid premise for this type of genre fare. The third act is actually quite good, up until an obtuse twist at the very ending kind of sours things. I honestly have no idea what that ending was even supposed to mean. I would bet money that Zahler's original script ended differently. ***EDIT*** I tracked down a copy of the script, and the original ending was much, much better

Maybe it's just me. But I'm missing the whole point.

Standard-fare gore-horror anchored by some rock-solid acting. Has the tone of Session 9 with the script from Reanimator. Doesn't quite stick the landing with an ending that's eyerollingly cliched. Still it's a decent enough of a genre film, but as one of the characters in the film notes "marinating meat in here is pretty meaningless isn't it?" The acting certainly marinated into the roll of film but is the intended audience really going to appreciate it?

Seriously underrated, but this was S. Craig Zahler's first script and it's well-executed. It's an extremely brutal, disturbing and unnvering affair that's certainly not for the feint of heart. People who watch horror movies for the tacky twists, inane guilt allegories, dorky "game" memes or preachy messages should also steer clear. Asylum Blackout is obviously a labour of love. It aims to be reasonably believable and is all about pure horror. Violent, visceral horror in its purest form.
