There are a lot of reasons to like this movie, but I found about twice as many reasons to dislike it. Walken is fantastic and there are a couple inspired scenes, but the whole thing reeks of amateur storytelling, with many illogical story points and some VERY stupid characters. I also really dislike Penn. I can't exactly put my finger on it, but he bugs me in almost every movie he's in.

It's sort of good, and then sort of only half fleshed out before people start dropping. I felt like we weren't getting the idea why people were motivated to do what, so when Walken isn't shown making some steely resolve with his gang to kill off the kids we're kind of left to figure out why he went that way. The rape scene tells a similar story, sure it's based on fact, but the movie played it sloppily and relied on us to fill in the gaps with a history lesson. A pity, as it had more potential.

With a cast that goes on for miles, At Close Range is a spectacle when it comes to earnest performances. Both Walken and Penn both have a tendency to become unhinged in their intensity, but they successfully reign it in to tell this incredible dark tale. The Madonna theme becomes receptive and violence seems to go from 0-60 in a blink of an eye, but this is definitely a forgotten gem of a film.

The acting is of the highest caliber, but Foley's showy camerawork sometimes serves as a distraction.

Realistic scenes with Walken and Penn and a gun pointed at one's head. Good flick.

The DP went apeshit with the snazzy shots to try and keep us interested in a PRETTY BORING story which is quite the feat when you have that source material. Live to tell~ True BLUE. TWO PENNS, MISSED YA CHRIS. I'll forget everything about this movie in a week.

Great acting and promising first act, but eventually slumps into a sort of macho Lifetime movie.

Excellent film with fantastic acting, particularly by Walken and Penn.

Relentlessly brutal, dispiriting and quite pointless melodrama, even with the saving grace of a factual basis.

Feels so shoddily put together and suffocatingly dark that whatever good is here gets smothered, even if it is based on a true story. Luckily, Sean Penn is fantastic in it, in the couple of scenes he really gets to show off (sadly, it's a case of too little, too late). Walken really pales in comparison. Also, I hope you're a fan of Madonna's "Live to Tell" because you're going to hear it A LOT.

Christopher Walken is pure evil in this, just chewing scenery. Both Penn brothers seem to come straight out of a Bruce Springsteen song. Great flick.
