An early scene, with Noqreh headed to the religious school, pictures her chanting the Koran from the back of the cart. Makhmalbaf brings in the overwhelming sound of a man chanting, drowning her out. But then she brings in a whole chorus of women and children chanting to drown out the man's voice. There is in this an underlying humanism (and feminism, for sure) that affirms the dignity of all people in a structured society such as this one. This remains my favorite of Samira M's films.
