Never trust a gravedigger with a top hat, this should be common knowledge.

Starts off pretty good, with great imagery and a compellingly despicable main character. But it doesn't really have much to offer beyond those things and I got kind of tired of seeing the lead ham it up. It might be more fun for horror fans who can derive pleasure from the kills, atmosphere and finale, but that's not me.

Boy, the inmates sure took over the asylum on that one! But it did have a certain lurid claustrophobic grandeur to it. And it would be hard to think of another picture that better embodies the word "intense." That guy was certainly a piece of work (and the definition of a dirtbag)...but I guess you could say he got his come-uppance (or -downance). The soundtrack of crazed vocals and gothic sound effects has proven to be rather influential over the years, it would seem.

A pretty intense piece of work and as good as it was, it could have been a complete disaster with all the bad circumstances that happened while making this movie. I really enjoyed the monologues and the tesnsity was built up very well. Didn't think I was going to enjoy this movie that much, but I'm glad I took the chance on it.

So much raw energy. It deserved a better story.

Those opening credits were a fucking riot - made me rub my hands in lurid anticipation. Brazilian giallo? Buddy wasn't a whole lotta fun, really. He was a bit of a bring-down, but in a side-splittingly hilarious kinda way, what with all the menacing free reign he had over the village. Wish I could casually saunter into some rustic pub and stab some dude's hand onto a table. "Bearded Dork Who's a Real Pain in the Ass" would've made a sufficient alternate title, like all those kinda films have.

A ballsy, 60s, Brazilian horror movie. Very fun with some good gore for its time. Ze makes for a good horror villain. He's so much fun to watch.

Terrible, but at the same time trashy enough to be sort of enjoyable. The main character is a humongous asshole who looks like a mix between a pedophile, Fidel Castro, and a magician. For 70 minutes he stabs, whips, drowns, poisons, rapes, burns, insults and blinds anyone who stands in his way, until he meets a grisly fate. The end. There's really nothing more to it.

We follow the undertaker Ze, who bears the markings of a traditional theatrical villain (top-hat, black beard and an evil laugh) as he commits a series of violent crimes on a quest to procreate. He does this while blaspheming, taunting God and Satan, and drawing the ire of a haggish fortune teller who foretells his doom. At one point he announces to a recoiling crowd that he will charge double price to bury his own murder victims. A silly and very campy horror film.

Delightfully macabre and a true labor of love.

This was my third Coffin Joe film and the thing I noticed was that Zé do Caixão is always written as an evil, scary figure but always came off as a disturbed, scared, vindictive little man who lashed out because of his own inferiority complex because that was the only way he was able to feel less pathetic.

A tale of despair in Brazil's countryside by one sadistic, violent, arrogant gravedigger who thinks he's entitled to have a baby and kill whoever he wants. Disbelief in anything -- God or devil, religion, superstitions -- and the amount of gore -- eyes pulled out, spider killing a woman, suicide by hanging, Coffin hurting a man with Jesus's crown of thorns -- make this a founding father of Brazilian horror. The misogyny doesn't register well these days, but this is either way a powerful film.

Meh. Not really that interesting aside from it's historical value.
