A group of scientists travel to a remote island to study the effects of nuclear weapons tests, only to get stranded when their airplane explodes. The team soon discovers that the island has been taken over by crabs that have mutated into enormous, intelligent monsters. To add to their problems, the island is slowly sinking into the ocean. Nicely taut at the beginning, but then it derails a bit and gets a little flaccid. The gimmick of having the dead guys speak telepathically through Hermit was intriguing, even if the explanation of it got a trifle...er, molecular. Good title sequence.

An irresistibly cheap '50s classic. Genuinely suspenseful in places, with Corman achieving an air of menace not even negated by the fact that the crab monsters are just about the stupidest creatures ever to scuddle across the screen on visible sneakers -- one of the sneaker wearers is rumored to be Jack Nicholson!

If you hate sea food and crab-sticks this film will solve the problem. Boil them, along with the film and put it out of my misery !

Roger Corman always delivered what the title promised nothing more and nothing less - just another hour at the drive in for your grandparents to finger each other
