With this last episode Akin trips on his own very own devices which made his movies work. For the most part the script looks unstudied, dialogues are flat, acting fluctuates. As a summary either he aims too high or he rushed through the project. In a way Innaratu had a similar faltering step with Babel. Whatever way we look at it, the movie is still very watchable, may have been exceptional with careful surgery.

Very orientalist; it's a work which tries to promote empathy and understanding but sadly has none. The binary oppositions Akin sets(and expects to be taken for granted) can be interesting, romantic and authentic for some "Western" audiences but otherwise the film is deeply flawed.

An amazing, sincere movie that ends on a really beautiful note. Better than what Hollywood has to offer lately.

Grippling. (Spoilers ahead) Everything comes full circle when a search in Istanbul by a German professor of Turkish descent for the Turkish daughter of a woman his father accidentally murdered in Germany ended with her moving into his apartment in Istanbul, on invitation of the mother of her German girlfriend who died trying to help her. Film is an epitome of the porous borders between Turkey and Germany which see people of either country often travelling to and settling down in the other.

I am dumbfounded that some liken The Edge of Heaven to such Oscar-baiting works as Crash or Babel -- meandering, reductive pieces that explain away the nuances of existence in favor of a vague notion of interconnectedness. It shares with those a contemplation of coincidence, circumstance and fate (as well as a certain messiness), but the drama it reaps from its episodal structure, rife with images whose reappearances amplify the magnitude of the film's sadness, is exponentially more poignant.

The story itself is fair enough. It avoids the most obvious blunders, but I still feel I've seen this movie 5 times before. Another thing that drags it down is the editing, it seems to me that the editor had 30 minutes to edit the whole thing.

Though a bit pat in its coincidences, the film manages to avoid the pitfalls of trite characterization and a disjointed narrative that so often come with these stories of interconnection. Akin gives each of his main characters a real weight, as Baki Davrak (Nejat) is especially effective in his role--there's an empathy in his face that fits well with his character.

There seems to be a certain disconnect between the film's naturalistic, laid-back feel and the abrupt, unusual death of some of the characters. Nevertheless, it is a beautiful and heartbreaking movie about loss and the unlikely connections formed between unlikely people.

A moving film with interesting characters, solid performances and poignant moments, but annoyingly overloaded with tragic irony. Enough near-miss encounters and poetic coincidences to choke a horse, the kind of thing that's supposed to make you go "oh look, they're standing right next to each other and they have no idea how intertwined their lives are!" or "oh, IF ONLY he hadn't taken down that poster!". It also pushes the cross-cultural thing way too forcefully, and feels too much like Babel.

A great film that finds humanity in sadness and turmoil, and by turning down the volume on those scenes and passing through them as any other it strips them of a grand design or meaning. You make decisions based on what you know and deal with what happens the best you can, nothing more. There are plenty of coincidences in the film, but instead of using them to force a narrative they're used to emphasize their own irrelevance. The characters drive everything.

A film that visualises often very poignantly the sense of loneliness and miscommunication between individuals and their struggles with attempting to find ones place between homelands. The film does sometimes drop into handholding and close-ups on obvious props that could very well be left to the viewer to notice.

It's not Akin's best work obviously but a good one. His naive and humane look is the biggest reason why this film works. Otherwise this text could be an annoying cliché.

Very interesting story close to Babel, but does not rise that high. Good acting, but pace of the movie was way too slow. No big emotions really and no drama in the end. Chapter names spoil a lot; if you miss one, you cannot miss the other. Worth to see, but details easy to forget.

All the threads of the story intersect. Not much drama or emotions are depicted. He really portrays how ppl deal with their losses and misfortune. There is a very subtle political agenda in the movie but it is not the central theme. A very good and gripping movie.

what a bad movie for the standard of Akin. what a weak caricature of a left-wing revolutionary militant terribly acted by Nurgul Yesilcay. such a pointless script ending at nowhere. very weak! addition after all praise and awards: worst script, worst observance of politics, worst acting

The film tries to orchestrate the same intensity of emotional manipulation that films like Babel have succeeded with. Unfortunately, the director seems unsure whether he wants to downplay that angle and embrace subtlety or take the contrivances of a melodramatic plot to their logical extreme. Nevertheless, it is an enjoyable yarn without the emotional turbulence of similar films.

Akin display devout empathy in this nuanced portrayal of people influenced/restricted by nationalism and borders, and how they cope with their losses and misfortunes. A concerned and humane film, cleverly suggesting its political agenda instead of forcefully transmitting it. In the mild and poetic tone of the last image(s), it seems to ask for further, quiet contemplation. Excellent stuff.

About halfway through I was starting to wonder if the procession of insane coincidences and missed opportunities were too much for me, but the third act makes it worth it in the end. It’s hard to give a movie that makes me cry like that less than four stars
