Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997)

Austin Powers (Myers) is a 60's spy who is cryonically frozen and released in the 1990's. The world is a very different place for Powers. Unfortuantly for Austin, everyone is no longer sex-mad. Although he may be in a different decade, his mission is still the same. He has teamed up with Vanessa Kensington (Hurley) to stop the evil Dr. Evil (Myers), who was also frozen in the past. Dr. Evil stole a nuclear weapon and is demanding a payment of (when he realises its the 90's) 100 billion dollars. (imdb)

This first entry in the series had the advantage of novelty, some fun characters, and a few clever jabs at the Bond franchise. Taken on its own, it's an OK watch. But man oh man, the law of diminishing returns hit the sequels HARD. It also doesn't help that we had to endure an army of unfunny idiots spouting this movie's catchphrases for years afterwards. Oh behave indeed.

Wins on Myers' dual charms and a fully realized aesthetic w/ delicious costumes, sets, and a swanky soundtrack - Divinyls and Sergio Mendes, Quincy Jones and a wild Burt Bacharach appearance! Couldn't get Haddaway for Roxbury tho. Woulda never guessed this was shot by Peter Deming who also did Lost Highway in '97 and worked with Lynch since. Vanessa Kensington may actually be the most well-written and performed Bond girl, Hurley doesn't get enough credit for her nuanced straight man performance.

Very funny, it's too bad Myers had to go on and make the sequels.

"Ooo, Behave!" Everyone's dad for the next decade after seeing this movie.

A totally unnecessary movie. as the Bond movies and their ilk function perfectly well as sly parodies of themelves. Myers tries hard, perhaps too hard, but beyond a couple of good sight gags and Myers's personal charm this movie has very little to offer. Gets off to a really bad start with an interminable urine gag. Gag is right.

Dorky as all hell, but made me laugh a little. Definitely better when it's still a novelty, but it's been hurt quite a bit by the ubiquity of the characters in the years following it. My appreciation for it goes down every time I hear some dorky middle-aged adult saying "yeah baby!" in a faux British accent.

Definitely a game changer for me. I know it's fashionable to hate on this because of the sequels and the cultural saturation it had, but it was well deserved. Both Austin Powers and Dr. Evil are truly brilliant character parodies and are still hilarious today.

The original Austin Powers was a great comedic novelty, but it lost traction from here on out by trying to add too much each time out.

Pretty clever, occasionally charming, sometimes a little too stupid. Not a bad spoof, but one with diminishing returns.

Just awesome. I can't believe how well this movie, and the rest of this series turned out. If you haven't watched these, you're missing out on some funny stuff.

Kinda cute, but I wanted to punch every idiot in the throat who insisted on attempting to imitate the "Yeeeeah, baby!" line from this flick. There were a LOT of them at the time.

It's funny, it was new, and it had a huge impact on pop culture. It was that huge impact however that lead to it being, less funny, not new, and somewhat annoying. For the most part, this movie is a good laugh and a good spoof of some classic spy movies. Pretty good!

Genuinely funny as a spy movie spoof, but the sequels are almost completely worthless.

Nice parody but I almost hate this movie because this kid on the bus in 8th grade would never stop quoting this damn movie.

A genuinely funny comedy. The sequels were very played out. But that's only because they were doing everything this one did many times over.

The original still has some of the charm and subtle jokes the cashing-in sequels lack.

There are some good laughs, but I wonder if I would have enjoyed this more if I didn't hear every bad impression of Austin Powers or Dr. Evil in my mind when I watched the film? I tried, I really tried, to silence those voices, but it couldn't be done. Still, it was a light and breezy 90 minutes, and the Swedish Penis Pump is still funny to my infantile brain.

I probably would have rated this higher in '97, but its impact has been reduced by being referenced to death in the years that followed. Myers is on top of his game here, hitting heights he would desperately try to get back to in the years to come. It's a very, very funny film with a great cast. It works because its funny, but also because it's great satire of the spy genre -- and it's that element of satire that's been so wholly missing from Myers' more recent fare. Still, this one's hilarious.

Unbelievably overrated. Lowest common denominator humor. Spawned even less funny sequels. People who quote this movie should be put to sleep.

The only way you can describe Austin Powers movies is hilarious, they never fail to be funny, uncomprimisingly funny.

Mike Myers career after this has made people forget just how funny this was. Come on, a factory that makes miniature models of factories?

Definitely funny when it came out. Very unique spoof of the 007 movies. Can be a bit tiresome nowadays though.

The 60's atmosphere is cool, some of the jokes are good, Mike Myers is energetic and likable, and Elizabeth Hurley is beautiful. Not a bad way to spend an hour and a half.

It's hard not to appreciate the top-to-bottom goofiness here. Groan-inducing puns (Alotta Fagina), eye-rolling punchlines ("I never forget a pussy... cat"), spy satire ("I too like to live dangerously"), repetition humour ("Sh!"), self-aware trope jokes ("I'm going to place him in an easily escapable situation..."), silly plot twists (see Dr. Evil's father-son drama), clever sight gags (see the final cover-up scene): It's no wonder there's only five minutes of story, and it's better for it!
