It is quite unexpected to see Banderas in this type of movie, but he pulls it off. It indicates that this is not your run of the mill Sci-Fi movie anyway, so you're warned.

About as coherent as Taro Yoko's Neir:Automata, but with less backtracking, more enemy types, and 79% fewer gratuitous robo-panty shots. In other words, pretty much what you'd think a movie with an insurance agent in the lead would be like. But with 79% fewer gratuitous robo-panty shots.

The idea is cool and interesting, but the execution is...off, somehow. It plods, and it doesn't really add a whole lot that's new to the dystopian robot/future genre. And...that's all I can think to say, really. Disappointing.

It's refreshing to see a Sci-Fi movie about AI and robots that become self-aware that doesn't actually make them bad guys. The premise of this is interesting because of that. However, there's some hokey acting here, it overstays its welcome a little bit, and the pacing is off on occasion. It's still a well shot movie with nice music, special effects and cinematography, but it doesn't end up being anything incredibly captivating.

So ploddingly paced that it felt like it was going on for hours, turns out I was only 20 minutes in, such a waste of potential

Watch it for the robots, not for the human characters or the pretty weak story.

Not being a huge sci-fi fan, I found this film enjoyable. I liked Banderas in this. Good soundtrack. A fun watch.

Banderas is either whispering or he is yelling. There is nothing in between.

A pure SF with the look and feel of Blade Runner http://opinion-as-a-moviefreak.blogspot.be/2014/10/automata-2014.html

One of those that i really wanted to like, even as i began watching it...but it just didn't deliver. It opens big, i expected alot, it gave about one single nugget then ended. Constant nods to blade runner were illadvised and annoying...from clear plastic coats to dreams of an overturned turtle in the sand...exposes even more how much this film lacks when it keeps purposely reminding you of the big granddaddy of a.i films. I liked the sound... effects, ambience, and score...erie and fitting

Another dystopian vision of the future with an interesting premise, but no follow through. Melanie Griffith looks like she had some bad plastic surgery.

There is a lot to like in this futuristic Sci-Fi movie of robots becoming self aware. Some erratic pacing. Poor editing lingers on some less interesting elements. Antonio Banderas gives an effective performance. Melanie Griffith was not good. Birgette Hjort Sorensen was cute. Some of the story and supporting characters were tedious, but the main storyline is delivered in a methodical and satisfying way. Great music and convincing special effects. Mostly entertaining and sometimes very engaging.

This runs at a weird pace. Banderas does a fine job, but the story never feels relevant. - Okay

This film doesn't do enough to stand out among all the others about artificial intelligence. Most of the film just feels like set-up before they get to the real crux of what the story is about. But we never really get there. I don't mind a quiet story - I don't need action scenes. But they still didn't say anything that hasn't already been said. The pacing is too slow, Antonio Banderas looks lost, and I just didn't feel like I gained anything by the end.

Could have been a great film but only manages to be OK. Still, "Automata" achieves much on a small budget. The film creates a relatively interesting dystopia future, its robot special effects are excellent (lots of good puppet work) and the film's first half boasts fine, noirish ambiance reminiscent of "Blade Runner"

Not much originality, nothing new, and just not that exciting. Doesn't hold too well.. Interesting ideas but nothing new, everything has been talked about in much better ways in many other movies.

Takes a great deal of obvious inspiration from Blade Runner, and its futurescape designs are pretty cool and imaginative. Unfortunately it squanders all potential - of which it has tons - in its second half, when the material turns from merely familiar to hamfisted ineptitude. The text is dime store philosophy, and Banderas isn't capable of elevating it. A shame, I really wanted to love this movie.

there's a certain flair to ibanez's direction, some nice touches here and there, but the story is somewhat undercooked. there are some cringeworthy moments with the dialogues as well. it feels like it could have been much bet --DEAR GOD WHAT'S WRONG WITH GRIFFITH'S FACE--, as i was saying, a much better movie if it didn't lack the directorial chops.

Very well made post-apocalyptic film which chooses to generally keep it lower tech considering the timeline while still having interesting robots/A.I. The visuals and locations are great and really have you buying into the deserted feeling of the story. They really delve into Asimov's laws in an interesting way. The acting is well done, kudos to Banderas and the rest of the cast.

Great world building in the first act followed by oversentimentalised awkward nonesense and a monumetally awful romanticised dance scene towards the conclusion. At least they had a go at realising Asimovs original vision, unlike the travesty that was I Robot (2004). Such a shame.
