Autumn in New York

(Disclaimer: I'm basing this on a tv airing I saw) I've always liked Gere and Ryder. Elaine Stritch is great in her supporting role, too. And, wow! Joan Chen did a wonderful job with the actors, and choice of cinematographer. Give it a try if you like any of the above people. (Winona's never looked better!)

It's such a shame Ryder and Gere aren't given better material here. OK, Gere isn't the most charismatic of screen presences, even on a good day, but Ryder is better than this any day of the week. The movie falls into a trap that only a very skilled band of filmmakers could have avoided. It oozes with saccharine sentimentality, and uses so many clichés, that, were the tone not as melodramatic, it could have been quite an effective satire of movies like this.

Bittersweet. Also not as deep as I wanted it to be.

Blecch. You know, if you don't have a story, just make somebody die. There is no focus in this movie. Why was it made? Richard Gere has really talented hair, though (as he himself has admitted, to his credit). The best part about this movie is the scene, achingly rendered, in which Winona Ryder shoplifts a gerbil from the pet store.

Too much. Just way too much.

This is one of the worst movies ever to be made. Winona Ryder's voice narration is total agony. Her voice starts to grate of my nerves the first 20 mins. into the movie. There is NO spark between her and Richard Gere, it's basically a long drawn out migrane fest with no resolution or feelings of attatchment to either of the characters. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME!!

Guilty pleasure.
