Was I entertained? Yeah, sure. Was I satisfied? Nope. Too many action set pieces, too many characters, a rather unengaging execution. It feels rushed and samey; again with the mind control, again with the SpaceMacGuffin, again with the faceless army third act. Doesn't add a lot to the Marvel movie universe apart from some new weak characters, and I think playing it annoyingly safe is this movie's greatest misstep. I kinda liked Ultron but I can't really say why.

Let me save you two and a half hours of your time and sum this up for you: Black Widow and Hulk, sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N- oh fuck he flew off in a stealth jet. Welp, that was dull while it lasted. Oh yeah, and there is a bunch of pointless action, shallow character development, more pointless action, and some sad attempts at philosophy. Let it gross a few hundred million and wait for the salivating fanboys to come back and watch the next Marvel movie. I know I'll be there, unfortunately.

The interesting moments are the quiet ones where you see the heroes bantering with each other. Ultron and his master plan definitely needed more thought in the writer's cave because it was a mess. Action scenes were more complex than the other marvel movies and visually interesting. The less popular heroes are actually given a voice and purpose now. Overall better than most of the other Marvel films but not the top. Kudos for not making Vision look completely ridiculous.

Where Avengers 1 felt like a fantastic culmination of Marvel's "Phase 1", the second one suffers from feeling like a pitstop on the way to the next batch of adventures. Ultron was a potentially great villain, but in the turbo charged story, with barely enough screen time to go around, he never really seems to pose much of a threat. This is not to say that the movie isn't entertaining, because it is a fun ride, it's just not as fine-tuned as the first time around.

"The city's flying, we're fighting an army of robots, and I have a bow and arrow. None of this makes sense." The closest Marvel is going to get to a Hawkeye movie; his segments are definitely the most worth watching. As for the rest, it doesn't really come near the heights of The Avengers the first time around. Ultron doesn't measure up to Loki as a villain, and the Hulk/Natasha romance seems ill-conceived. However, it's still the type of enjoyable ride that Marvel's become good at churning out.

Sure, it looks awesome when Iron Man hammers The Hulk repeatedly in the face. And yeah, this is a well-paced and very entertaining sequel. But... The somewhat formless plot writing reeks of procrastination, and the oh-so-witty character of Ultron stinks even worse (James Spader is an even less intimidating villain than Lee Pace's LARP-type role in "Guardians").

This movie reminded me of that time when I begged my parents for a new He-Man doll (Webstor, if you were wondering), and they told me that I hardly played with the stuff I already had. So I meticulously arranged every single toy in my possession all around the living room, and made extra super loud noises as I brought every single one of them into play. I actually had an okay time, but it wasn't really what I wanted, now was it? Things I learned from this review: I was a scheming little bastard.

A whole bunch of bleh. Characters fly around the screen and appear in places, then punch cartoons, then stuff happens. Everyone's power is editing themselves into a boring action sequence. Characters range from confusing to downright contradictory. The score is fucking awful. I'm sick of Marvel.

This is a perfectly average summer popcorn movie. My minor complaint is that I'd prefer my fanboy cinema to have deeper thoughts/scenes that cause audiences to have philosophical conversations with friends & family. Still, Ultron continues an eerie thematic undercurrent in recent action flicks: people fighting a great evil that they themselves created to fight an invisible or distant enemy. Overall the movie serves as a workplace action comedy--which isn't a bad thing once you think about it.

Full disclosure: I am slowly but surely losing my interest in these comic book movies. Even ones that aren't just rehashes of every other super hero movie and are actually good I generally just "like" now. I can't tell if this was bad or if I just have had enough when they all feel the same. The action felt just like what I saw in Captain America 2 only with the other Avengers, the romance angle lacked chemistry, and the humor was overused and mostly bad.

Let's talk about Marvel stepping on themselves by having too big a universe and also too little focus on heroism. The best scene in this movie is when the superheroes try to lift Thor's hammer. It's a nice bit of comradery, humor, and legend building. That shot of Thor noticing the slight movement when Cap touches it is perfect. Perfect. Then seconds later Vision is walking around with it because WHO CARES? By End Game, I felt nothing when Cap wielded it, and I REALLY wanted to feel that.

Haha they are talking about mundane things while they are fighting. Computers are bright floaty pictures you swish around with your hands. Hey Joss, adding a sentence about God in every Ultron speech wont bring enough gravitas to surpass your dogshit cinematography. If Vision had nailed Ultron to a cross I'd probably bump this score up to a 41.

I'll be the first to admit how much I praise comic book movies that feel like comic books, but this has kind of forced me to admit that it isn't always a good thing. While a movie like Iron Man felt like a fantastic first issue, Age of Ultron feels like a badly written annual. Entertaining and fun to look at, but dumb and barely a movie.

With the same simplistic structure, and the same puerile sensibility as the last one, it's essentially the same movie. But this time Scarlet Witch's dream-horror abilities added just barely enough psychological depth to keep me on board through the Transformers style destruction porn, and The Hobbit style cgi hordes of identical bad guys getting bopped around the screen in meaningless fashion. Very occasionally the screen looked like a comic book panel, and then I shivered with true delight.

It's gotta be insanely difficult to balance a story with between six and eleven major characters, and I admire that characters without there own movies received more attention. My main complaints are with the shaky cam, the super fast editing, Ultron's rushed motivation, a few fairly predictable plot points, and not as much inclusion of the twins. On the other hand, the action scenes, portrayals of the characters, comedy, and Whedon's own devotion to the story really show.

Suffers a bit from an overlong running time, repetitive fight scenes against hordes of insubstantial enemies, some dodgy dialogue and the feeling that we've seen it all before. That said, even when they're a bit mediocre, these Marvel films still have a lot of charm. I like the cast, and some of the ideas and execution are pretty impressive. It's alright, just not very satisfying.

I guess I'm one of the few that was truly pleased with this movie. I agree that it's a little less eventful than the later MCU films and it's not as funny as the first Avengers, but the quiet moments between the characters are great. Banner was the best character, and I really dug what they did with Hawkeye and Black Widow. The action isn't too bad the the story develops our heroes further. Obviously well acted and made. I personally thought it was the kind of sequel we deserved.

True to its nature as a sequel, AoU does what the first Avengers did, but faster, stronger, harder and definitely louder. Here's my best attempt to muster enough energy to review Avengers 2 as though it were an actual attempt at storytelling & filmmaking instead of just one more step in Disney's tedious commodifying of color-by-numbers fan service: More like Age of Dulltron. Don't worry, Avengers 3 promises a whole new adventure carried by the afterthoughts of this movie, though without Whedon I guess we might have to do without the hilariously ineffective stabs at pathos.

Ultron is definitely the star of the show here, and James Spader's charisma completely carries the movie. Also appreciated is the actual characterization of Hawkeye, and the scenes towards the beginning where the Avengers were just hanging out and being themselves (in particular the scene where everyone was drunkenly trying to lift Thor's hammer was a highlight). There ended up being too many mindless action sequences, but overall, it's an engaging, if not spectacular, comic book movie.

Alright, so no one else is willing to just be honest. This movie sucks, it is as simple as that. It's so crammed up to the brim with mindless 'action', shitty dialogue, bad pacing and then some. Whedon seems out of his element, 'jokes' fall flat most of the time and in the end you wonder, why the EFF did I spend 13 Euro's on this drivel? What a letdown... I really enjoyed the 1st movie and I'm a big comic book fan -- but now, for the 1st time since the cinematic superhero boom started, I feel like the genre has officially blown its brains out. The bubble has burst. By the halfway mark, I was constantly fidgeting in my seat wanting to leave; I haven't felt that way in ages! Character development of Black Widow felt contrived, as did her romance with the Hulk. The female superheroes and other female characters all seem token in the Avengers series. Age of Ultron is an enormous amount of fun. But whereas the first Avengers felt like a standalone film in it's own right, this sequel feels like a less significant piece in the larger MCU jigsaw. Credit to Joss Whedon, he has even more characters, plot threads and MCU baggage to juggle and the unveiling of Vision in particular is incredibly satisfying. And as expected the action, set pieces, cinematography and mix of old and new characters is certainly fan pleasing and thoroughly entertaining.

I have to give Whedon credit for orchestrating the impressive feat of making a bunch of barely-known superheroes iconic and interesting to the main public within just a few years. Now, I have to give him credit for turning them into bland, lifeless caricatures of themselves in an even shorter time. Few things in this movie stand out (Scarlett Witches dreams being one of them). It feels like a very expensive fan-made sequel, made by someone who never grasped the essence of the first movie.

The newest installment for in the "Marvel Cinematic Universe" is the disappointing sequel to the smash hit "The Avengers"(2012). Although not necessarily a bad movie the film unfortunately feels more like bloated filler when compared to other films in the series. The movie wants to do too many things while not doing any of them really new or noteworthy. The movie still serves as more of the same decent summer blockbuster fun, but in the end as a whole amounts to less than the sum of its parts.

Credit to Whedon for managing to squeeze so many characters into one film & keeping the whole thing mostly coherent & fun. In Ultron we're given only the outlines of a great villain, but Spader's voice work is perfect. Negatives are plenty however. Whedon's wisecracking screenplay is considerably more irritating than funny, & somehow even more hokey than his usual fare. It's too long also, & dare I say the action sequences could have been cut by about 20%? The Hulk/BW love-up is horrid also.

The storytelling in the first film had a purity to it when it came to throwing these characters into a room and seeing them slowly join forces. We're past all of that now, so unfortunately we get a typical overstuffed superhero sequel. Solid character work is interrupted by endless amounts of stuff happening and Ultron starts off intimidating but is quickly ruined by stupid one liners. It's entertaining in all the ways you'd expect but stubbornly avoids being anything better.

Lord knows I'm a Joss Whedon fan - I've watched Firefly's full run many times, Buffy's twice, Angel, Dollhouse, all that stuff - but, beyond the Whedon-y quips, I sense little of him in the final product here. Those quips, along with a quarter-billion dollars of effects and spectacle, certainly make the film watchable, but overall Marvel's corporate hand is heavily felt in a generic story. Ultron himself is a disappointment as a villain, better than Ronan or Malekith, but no Joker or Magneto.

Enjoyable watch. I really like the individual stories of the characters and how they combine into a greater backstory which the films lead to; that is the strong point for me. That is also the problem which I had with this movie. It does not progress on that story. The action and effects are top-notch as you would expect from such a production. However, it falls flat in all the other departments. Felt like a filler-movie to me. Villain had non-logical motives.

A movie not at war with Ultron so much as it's at war with itself. The film is desperately swinging blindfolded for what makes these characters human, from Hawkeye's suburban respite to Banner's brooding romance - even Ultron and Thor make the attempt. It's at constant odds with the God and Gods theme and oppressive PG violence. I think it's fatigue - when Hawkeye tells us nothing makes sense, and you have to make the best with what you've got, that's Joss crying inside.

Probably not quite as seamless and of-a-piece as the first one, but almost as much of a mega-entertaining blast of adrenaline. Ultron's a great, vivid--if one-dimensional--bad guy, and the team interplay is much more fun this go-around. Basically plays like an epic-sized story arc from the "Avengers" comics, with peaks & valleys in the plotting, characters drifting in & out of the action. It's awesome fun just to sit back and drink everything in.

Age of Ultron doubles down on witty one-liners, all the while aiming for darker tones. As Whedon's (probably) final feature in the MCU, it succeeds. While the film does feel like battle after battle, it's entertaining even when it's setting the stage for Civil War and Infinity War. The new characters are interesting, Spader does an excellent job as Ultron (who is honestly more compelling than several previous individual foes combined), and Bettany finally gets a body.

A total overload of action, fighting, nonsense, graphics, effects, sound & music. Amidst the chaos are a few good performances, some good computer graphics and a few interesting ideas. It's a comic on steroids and its frenetic pacing gets a little tiresome. Most of the ending was an escalating panorama of fighting scenes with a thin story that is all over the place. I felt bombarded. Too much CGI played in fast forward and very poor storytelling nearly ruins it.

This film has a lot to it. That means it has a lot of strengths--the returning cast's chemistry; Spader and Taylor-Johnson working off Whedon's inveterate smugness; a convincing sense of scale. But it also has a lot of weaknesses: the confusing story; the tacked-on death; the abject lack of change in any of the characters; the relegation of black superheroes to minor roles; the apparent belief that we should allow ultra-rich superheroes to cause untold property damage because they know best.

While admittedly my expectations were low, the Avengers sequel surprised by trumping the original at pretty much everything and by being almost interesting, undermined by its undeveloped themes. For instance, something like the Avengers actions culminating on a 9/11 parallel is of little consequence; seeing how by the end everything wraps in a nice innocuous sanitised resolution of a warfare conflict. It toes the line, the safe and uncomplicated line or Marvel's movie plans.

Everything that Joss Whedon pulled off so effortlessly in the first installment feels strained here. 'Age of Ultron' is the equivalent of 'Iron Man 2' to 'Iron Man'. Suffers partially from being a middle rather than an end, from being stuffed too full, and from a lack of menace from Ultron. However, the action scenes are effective, and the decision to put the emotional burden on the lesser-known characters was a very smart one. It's telling that when Ultron first wakes, Whedon has us see the world through his eyes: he wants the audience 2 connect w/ all his characters, even if it's a robot bent on killing us all. Not many filmmakers pull off what Whedon's done twice now: there are many franchise mandates 2 meet in a film like this & even more characters 2 juggle, but he keeps it all in the air with a fluidity that's astounding. The setpieces r bigger than ever, but, luckily, so is the depth of characterization

Another healthy dose of enormous and entertaining action make this a fun film to watch in spite of its mostly lazy writing (see Wanda and Pietro's weak antagonist motivations-and Ultron's, for that matter-and correspondingly cheap turn; the half-baked Hawkeye development; the far-fetched and only vaguely explained bad guy antics), with the aid of one well-timed bit of self-awareness: "The city's flying, we're fighting an army of robots, and I have a bow and arrow. Yeah, it sets things up for future films, but people need to understand that these movies don't exist in a vacuum and that's not how you're supposed to view them.

Better than the first, if only because it somewhat acknowledges the messed up ideology inherent in the premise. It has no guts to follow through, though, so by the end it's still the same big explosion fest with the occasional wisecracks. Still, the character interactions and the action are good enough to make it enjoyable.

It's got enough flashy effects, awesome action, and funny one liners to hold it's own in a market flooded with comic book movies, but "Age Of Ultron" is actually a small step down. Paul Bettany as Vision was pretty cool, as a derpy Superman hero's hero, and Spader's voice was just too recognizable for me, it didn't work as a villain because all I could think about was the pretty boy from the 80's and 90's. Solid outing, still oodles of entertainment here, but just not quite as good as the first.

Better than i expected, it's really dynamic and well-paced, and characters are flavorful and charismatic. Does stick to the comic-book type of story, but the output is not ridiculous.

Very much on par with the first movie, almost its equal, but it failed to really cover any new ground and being a sequel is inevitably unoriginal in some ways. I did appreciate the additional character development of Hawkeye and Ultron was much better than I thought he would be.

I dug this! I was a little tentative going in, I have to admit, because the more of the trailer(s) that I saw, the more I worried that the movie was going to go "too cornball", if you get me. MCU movies tend to walk that line between entertaining and self-parody; luckily, AoU never falls over that edge (though Ultron himself certainly pushes the envelope). But not only is AoU fun and fulfilling action-wise, the emotional depth steps it up a notch. This leaves us in a great place going forward.

The only real flaw with the movie is that I went in already expecting it to be better than the Avengers? So when it was, it was just living up to my expectations.

It's fun in a boom-splash-kaboom way, but it's as deep as a puddle.

There were parts of this movie I really enjoyed, but other parts...not so much. There were some pacing issues, where some shots lasted a bit too long and upset the flow of the movie. Would have liked to see a bit more character development...But, still, a fun movie.

This...movie...was...AWESOME!!!!!! It had everything you'd want in a Marvel movie. It had action, comedy, romance, great acting, great visual effects, and awesome directing. I only liked it a little better than the 1st one. I'm really interested to see what they're going to do with their new recruits. Can't wait!

Ultron's word vomit became tiresome rather quickly, which is a shame, because the villain might be the strongest aspect of Whedon's latest Marvel orgy. The humor is bad, the action is typical, the romance is forced, and the story is a silly mess. The lack of novelty may be the reason for the glaring issues, which, obviously, is no fault of the filmmaker. It may be time for me to admit that I am tired of superhero movies.

A pretty good movie with a great cast. The returning characters are as good as ever, and the new characters are interesting. Marvel makes another enjoyable movie.

A workable narrative, but with deep flaws. A relationship that feels terribly forced, some unfortunate decisions in how to introduce characters, completely forgetting that Iron Man 3 was a thing... There's energy and flow, James Spader is amazing, so is Paul Bettany, so is the rest of our amazing cast. It doesn't break the larger narrative, nor the individual stories. But I'm glad Joss Whedon is departing the MCU - he needs a rest. (2019 update: ...maybe it did break the narrative tho...)

It's fun. I enjoyed myself. It's hard NOT to enjoy a witty Whedon action film. Spader is positively delicious as Ultron. But Whedon can't push the stakes beyond those that were in its predecessor, and it can only solve its problems by outrageously tipping the scales in the heroes' favor via new characters. The film's very title is a misnomer. Tension is direly needed here. I fear future MCU films will stick with inconsequential villains who ultimately change nothing. It's fun, but not "wow" fun.

The opening shot that shows off each of the Avengers in action sets the tone. It's a typical Marvel Universe flick that sets out to provide flashy spectacle and cheeky humour to comic book fans and family audiences. Technically proficient when it comes to the action but it falters when things turn dramatic, especially in the plodding second act. The banter between characters isn't quite as smart as in the first film, and a romance subplot falls flat. But hey, it's fun to watch on the big screen.

Character development and plot feel way better than the first one. Maybe the Hulk isn't quite as fun though. I'm impressed that he managed to make every character seem important.

I think I'm just a masochist to continually subject myself to these movies when I know they are going to be garbage before seeing them. This one was bad even for Marvel's standards. The plot is so disjointed and awkward and they just keep introducing new characters and new explosions to keep you distracted from how shit everything is. I can't wait for the Avengers 3 when they have more explosions and another plot that is by the numbers and more characters that no one gives a shit about.

For added excitement, turn the sound down and watch the shiny bouncy CGI. Plus it helps prevent screen burn in.

The most comic book movie MCU has put out, but it's starting to feel a little over stuffed and all the subplots suffered by being underdeveloped. The worst love subplot which comes out of nowhere (its not like you had several movies to make it....) and is handled horribly with cliche or dialogue that just doesn't fit the movie's tone.

The whole idea of Ultron functioning as a foil to Tony Stark is laughably absurd and runs on a really stupid slippery slope that not a single person would ever fall down, not to mention his dialog was insufferable. The rest of the movie is very conventional MCU with everyone being quip machines and painful attempts at self-awareness. In the broader scheme, a lot of plot threads introduced here don't really go anywhere anyway so like what's the value here?

* We got some more in depth look at most of the characters which was good, I think once again, the movie was too long for its own good, but I actually never realised how long it was while watching. It's after it ends that you realise how long it was, but still a fun watch. Dunno if it were better than the first, but I think they compliment each other well. Some very good lines once again, Whedon is good at this.

Not very focused. Ad-libbing by Robet Downey Jr. and a couple of quips by others are refreshing. Definitely not as good as the first one.
