Shankaran (Mohanlal), a Brahmin youth, lives in constant frustration at being unemployed, with a drunkard father who used to be a famous singer & his stepmother & stepsister. His frustration at life causes him to snub the overtures of Bhama (Ambika) who was in love with Shankaran. After a showdown with his family, Shankaran leaves for Madras, while Bhama is married off elsewhere. However, Shankaran & Bhama meet again in Madras & he learns of her loveless married life with Mani Iyer (Murali). (Summary by iceblox)
