BNA: Brand New Animal

Thematically daft and full of contrived non-sense, BNA fails to deliver. As a racism metaphor, it tries to apply interesting ideas about how segregation leads to self-destructive tendencies but that becomes over exaggerated to the point of parody with a twist so heinously stupid in relation to that theme it's honestly insulting. The pacing also goes wild, bringing up so many plot twists out of nowhere that have no time to breath and, ultimately, become rather pointless and non-sensical.

It's got your typical great Trigger animation and design, combined with your typical shallow, stereotyped Trigger protagonists. And while BNA tries to deliver a relevant political message, it bites off more than it can chew and ends up saying very little. Now despite this, it's still pretty fun at times - but you could always just watch Kill la Kill again to see it all done better.

This show takes your standard X-Men/Zootopia-style metaphor, and infuses it with a) breathless cartoonish energy, b) sapphic ladies. I love the unselfconscious fluidity of Michiru's powers, and her complex relationship with Nazuna powers the plot (and everybody realizes they were already dating before the series started, right?). Plus, while the metaphor is up and down on an overall level, it has incredibly incisive and powerful moments - ep 4 is especially thoughtful. And the animation's great!

Dissapointment

If you already watched a Trigger show, this will add nothing new. At this point they are simply rehashing the same few ideas they used in Kill la Kill, only with a fraction of that show's chaotic energy and humor.
