A boring, lame, cheaply made pile of crap. The only thing I like about this was recognizing most of the cast from better movies and shows.

Disney tried to make their own variation on _The Wizard of Oz_ (complete with erstwhile Scarecrow Bolger as Barnaby) in this colorful but insincere version of the Victor Herbert operetta. Lots of splashy sets, costumes, and special effects. Despite some good casting (Funicello, Wynn, and Kirk come off best) this hasn't the heart to make it work, and lacks the spooky undercurrent that makes the Laurel and Hardy version so memorable.

It's definitely a cute little lark for the kids, though I do remember being traumatized by the talking trees when I was little, so maybe it's not so good. The original Laurel & Hardy version is better. Sorry Annette.

Colorful but misguided remake (although there's so little of Victor Herbert left that "remake" hardly applies) is not Uncle Walt's finest hour. The two comedians designed to evoke Laurel & Hardy fall flat, and Ray Bolger is wildly miscast as Barnaby, although he does his best. Ed Wynn has a fun turn as the Toymaker, but Annette and Kirk have no chemistry and much of the movie is just flat. Some good songs, and a rousing toy soldier march at the end are about all this one has to offer.
