While the big event is rather predictable once you know what's wrong with Milla, it was still done really well. The ending is fantastic, with a beautiful final shot. Aside from that, I wasn't loving it. It did feel like a genuine family, but the core relationship felt half-baked. While Scanlen will get most of the attention for her powerful performance as Milla, Ben Mendelsohn gave a very subdued and equally powerful performance as her father, which people shouldn't sleep on.

No likeable characters or really anyone to connect to which is disappointing for a film dealing with mortality. Nothing felt fully realized or explored enough. The father had the most intriguing storyline, yet it went nowhere. I usually love movies that deal with a terminal illness but I felt nothing here, even at the beautiful end shot.

Remember that self-assurance you had when you were young? This movie connects with it and then explores how we cope with its loss… B+

No character in this film is doing particularly great, but it asks you to consider that sometimes "not great" might just be "good enough".

Holy crap, that ending. It's just a pity one of the central four characters remains a little of an enigma, but then again, it's a movie about not getting what you want.

Bracingly honest and moving drama stands out from "teen terminal disease" pap by never exploiting the disease elements, but using them first as a secondary speedbump in the relationship between Scanlen and Wallace (both excellent) and then as a final bind in the devastating final act. Handing the leading quartet 4 such finely etched characters cancels out an inevitable familiarity to the story arc - the journey mightn't be new, but these characters are certainly original and distinctive.

There's only so much ‘dysfunctional family dynamics’ I can take, especially when part of a virtually plotless, stakeless, 2 hours movie, and it’s not like you haven’t seen the ‘terminal illness’ card played a dozen times before, which is forever a lazy starting point in my book. Played convincingly but just not my cup of tea.

A melancholic drama that takes things lightly. I remember some characters were rather weirdly developed but I forgot to rate it at the time so there's that.

Did she give something other films like this did not give? Well, not necessarily. But everything just clicked. This was one enjoyable entirety. I liked it.

I'd be willing to stay in the world created in this movie for much longer than just 2h.
