The film sticks close to formula and cliché, and jerky editing and intentionally blurry camerawork muddles the action sequences, robbing them of any thrill. It's too bad this wasn't shot in a more coherent way; the lead actors (Missy Peregrym and Jeff Roop) seem game, and there's one breakdown scene between the pair that is well written and acted. If the filmmakers had leaned on their actors more and worked out a few holes in the story this could have been fun.

A movie about a bear, that shows the bear only twice. The two lead characters were ignorant, although I suppose they were in shock and didn't know what to do. I suppose it isn't a terrible movie, as the quality wasn't bad, but overall it was a letdown, especially since I found myself rooting for the bear. The reviews seem pretty decent for this, so give it a shot. Although personally I wish I hadn't rented this, wasn't worth the 3 or so bucks.

Things work properly and the two leads gives a descent performance, but this is nothing new. The story is pretty basic and the shots have somehow been seen before in another low budget wilderness movie. In the end it's the stupid character decisions that ruins it for me. *Okay

Some nice scenery, non (totally) stupid characters and great gore effects

The bear attack scene is possibly the most memorable moment of violence I have ever seen in a movie. You may gather from my score how I feel about the rest, which was so much like a lifetime movie, that for a while I thought the bear was going to become a teen dad. Cause that's the thing about fatherhood: it comes when you least expect it.

Most of Backcountry is, unfortunately, fairly typical. Naive characters do things that the audience know they shouldn't. Where the film isn't typically, however, is the horrific five minutes that created a fantastic sense of fear. It is something to see just for this scene.

A thrilling movie about a couple going for a backcountry camping trip, only to find themselves being hunted by a bear. Sometimes terrifying, it has good actors who make us care about their characters and a simple but realistic and entertaining plot.

A very well made blend of The Shining, The Blair Witch Project, and Grizzly Man. Great symbolism and pacing.

Spoilers: Backcountry's idea of a rising action is, in a few words: FORESHADOWING, FORESHADOWING, FORESHADOWING. Look, it couldn't be more obvious that someone is going to get mauled and eaten alive by a bear. Just let it happen. My desire to fast forward was overwhelming. When you get the goods, it's pretty brutal, and the last 30 minutes can be tender and slightly thrilling, but the build up was tedious. I also couldn't stand Jeff Roop, the boyfriend.

Two city mice go on an adventure in the woods only to encounter a big nasty bear. You don't see him much but when you do he means Business.

Slow, and slow, and slow, and slow, and bear attacks, shaky cam, bad visuals, and uneven attempt to escape, and back to slow. The end.

Nothing too implausible about the way the humans behaved, no superbeary qualities to the bear, no annoying badassery (let's pretend the Irish guy never happened)... Yeah, I enjoyed this a lot.

When our niave but likeable couple go for the last wilderness trek before the trail season ends, without a map, leaving their axe in a tree, and then again by a fire, and deciding his girlfriends phone is surplus baggage, you have enough information to know this isn't going to end well. Miraculously, the girl survives an attack by an animatronic bear (although her boyfriend was not so lucky) and wanders around aimlessly for a few days, finally ending up exactly where she started from! Unlikely

The scene that pictures a bear eating a man is so graphic and well-shot that the entire film -- and its subjective lens, framing a woman lost in the woods trying to survive -- falls short before it. The type of horror that provides an impact -- even though you forget it as soon as it ends.

This is a good film. There are plenty of thrilling and scary moments as well as some slow ones. The cast is small but they do a good job here. Overall I would recommend this movie.

Very grisly for a black bear, get it? There's something admittedly basic, and minor, about Backcountry, but if it purported to have "more action", it probably wouldn't have worked. For me, it did the job... barely serviceable acting aside.
