Backtrack

Dennis Hopper playing the saxophone is something to behold. This is the kind of movie that has opening credits but forgets to mention Joe Pesci or Charlie Sheen. A bit awkward but worth a watch. It's a sweaty film in a non sweat related way.

With a cast like that how could it be bad? Well, when 3 cast members try to have their name removed from the film you know it can't be good. And good it ain't. Turturro is hilarious, Foster and Stockwell give great performances but everything else is marred by a ridiculously below-average script.

Jodie Foster is good in this film but Dennis Hopper is miscast and they have no chemistry together. The script is bad and there are a lot of good supporting actors wasted in this movie. Overall this film is very disappointing.

Let's be clear, this is bad. The turn Jodie Foster takes in act two makes no sense and then it just gets worse. The final five minutes is completely illogical. However, with this cast and this amount of lunacy the film is entertaining. I couldn't help feeling bad for Jodie Foster as she likely had an awful time on set but she does still deliver a good performance for a terribly written character. Would the full 180 minute Hopper cut be better? Maybe, probably not.
