Love triangles are a very common theme in French cinema but this is the best example I've seen. It is smart but understated, strange but accessible, well cast, and endlessly appealing to the senses - the cinematography and music are magnificent. Chabrol's first really great movie.
A strange and enigmatic film about obsession, jealousy and middle-class ennui. The interplay between the Audran and Sassard is fascinating throughout. Chabrol never quite allows you to put your finger on their motivations, and once you begin to get an idea of who is manipulating who, the roles switch and you're left wondering once more. The hunting apparel around the house seemed apt; for both Why and Frédérique the fun seemed to be more about the chase rather than the catch.

definitely entertaining, but also rather silly, with some ridiculous romantic entanglements. and unlike godard, there isn't really enough stylistic compensation for the stupid gender bullshit, except for the last 20 minutes or so. if the whole movie were like that, fully engaging with its own silliness, it could have been more interesting. as it is, it's good but hard to take seriously.
