Bad Influence

Rob Lowe making a sex tape is a little on the nose, but the movie has a clever script and the leads are fantastic. Oddly good soundtrack for 1990 as well. It's The Office vs. Parks and Rec battle we were too gracious to ask for.

If this was made in 2023, Spader and Lowe would have explored each other's bodies. You know things are going bad when someone chooses a cool new nickname based off their name. "I am now longer Joseph, call my Jay Jay". This is all sort of silly, but it's a fun romp, even if it never nails the tone it is looking for.

A glossy morality play set in late 80s LA about how the 1960s are a bad influence, and furthermore sociopathic.

These dreary erotic thriller wannabe trashy type films were all the rage once, thank god they're not anymore

While this is no "L.A Confidential" - it's still an effective little thriller and shows that Hanson was able to deliver quality work long before his masterpiece. Ending is a bit of a cop-out but doesn't hurt the film too much. Nice to see former brat pack stars Lowe and Spader working together.

I have lots of problems with this movie, from deep character inconsistencies, to an unsatisfying ending. But the whole thing is extremely watchable. I had some fun and a few giggles along the way.

Bad Influence has gotten lost in the shuffle of mediocre 90s erotic thrillers. What it has is a sex-crazed Lowe with no motivation to committed chaos and a bookish Spader who ends of getting quite sweaty. The plot is simple and its two leading men make for a fun 90 minutes.
