Pretentious crap. It tries to paint itself as some deep, subtle commentary about the human psyche and libido (or something) but that doesn't disguise the shows obnoxious anime stereotypes and dull, convoluted dialog. A lot of dialog is just WORDS with little meaning and the overall message of the whole thing doesn't convey anything particularly meaningful or interesting. I'd question the show's popularity,but... https://detarame.files.wordpress.com/2009/07/bakemono-lul-wut.jpg

Seems style is the draw here, since while the characters are interesting, they're completed drowned by the constant in-your-face style, even when simply talking. And boy do they talk a lot - the one time an actual action scene came on I practically cheered, because finally something was happening! It's all very tiring, and the episodes about the "snail" girl are some seriously cringey shit. Typical overpraised otaku-bait.

This was a very spastic and mostly entertaining show that had the aesthetics of Utena, which I liked, and the in-your-face dumb shit of Kill La Kill & FLCL, which I didn't like. I don't really get all the love and hype this gets but it gets a solid 65 points from me.

Ignore the other review, this is a great show. An extremely incisive psychological interrogation of its characters. Pretty avant-garde visually too, plays with symbolism and perspective in interesting ways. Also I thought the fanservice was pretty tame given the show's reputation (though they'd ramp that stuff up later...) Gets even better in the second season too, despite what I just said. Some of the best characters barely feature here.
