Ballets Russes

2005
Documentary

Unearthing a treasure trove of archival footage, filmmakers Dan Geller and Dayna Goldfine have fashioned a dazzlingly entrancing ode to the revolutionary twentieth-century dance troupe known as the Ballets Russes. What began as a group of Russian refugees who never danced in Russia became not one but two rival dance troupes who fought the infamous "ballet battles" that consumed London society before World War II. Beautiful. And beautiful to listen to the beautiful Irina Baronova address the audience beautifully after the screening I attended in Melbourne.

Engrossing but osrt of sad to see the end of an era.

Tentative first steps towards this film. In the end, to reminisce and see a life of joy, beauty, and dedication is always a wonderful thing.

I don't have a real interest in ballet. The only time I've come close to anything regarding ballet was that weird weekend when I was kidnapped by those old ladies and forced to wear a tutu. Still, Ballets Russes gave me more respect for the art, and seeing all these ancient Russian ladies chat about their time on the stage was oddly charming. Pretty bittersweet overall, and all the footage is cool to see.

I feel bad about giving this a low score because it looks like it's probably a tremendously enjoyable documentary if you're into ballet. Unfortunately I'm not and watching the film didn't change that. I don't remember why I thought I wanted to watch it, even. Sorry, Ballets Russes.
