The movie shows what the world did to her in detail - and that too just through the narrow lens of sexual abuses - one after another after another. But it misses out largely on how she saw them, what were the thoughts running through her head, and how the world saw her. The director doesnt do justice to the character. Directing the film without ever meeting the person when she is living in the same country.. come on. Its as if the director abused her with his Intellectual dick joining the list..

chilling! how much people can and are willing to endure in the name of change, is unbelievable! hats up for this woman. at times really hard to stomach, i guess a lot just because of the huge cultural differences. but still i thought it was a good movie and you get a glimpse into a culture and problems you do not really know anything about it and not even truly can imagine.

Technically decent & well acted but never manages to find its identity between the exploitation story, the real life story and the social commentary story. In the end the rape revenge angle of Phoolan Devi's life is the least interesting one. That's however what Kapur seems most interested in. It's like he doesn't even care about her character and motivation other than get back at the people who humiliated her. Shies away from the complexity of the story and stumbles in its moral contradictions.

While not a bad movie (and quite a good cast), my DVD was a double bill with a flick called "The perfect husband" (seriously). I mean wtf??? Toe knee :-)

While an interesting story, and I can definitely understand the controversy, director Kapur never really seems able to explore his talents to their full extent. Plus, I really hate when biopics cut out before some of the most interesting times in their subjects' lives and fill in the rest with an epitaph.
