A deserved camp classic with a comic book sense of humour about itself (rare in such a humourless genre as Sci-Fi) and a genuinely fascinating art design that is a dizzying mixture of classical art and tacky 60s fashion. Jane Fonda is a fucking goddess, gorgeous and goofy.

A PG-rated porn. It has the same quality of writing, and the same number of sex scenes (not shown, of course). I think it actually would have been better as a full-out NC-17, because I have no idea what else was supposed to be holding my attention; it certainly wasn't the poorly-paced action.

The plot, characters, and goofy sets and costumes are all endearingly cheesy enough to warrant a watch. There are some genuinely cool sci-fi moments peppered in as well, for fans of the genre -- with one stand-out scene taking place in a combination hookah bar and S&M dungeon. Otherwise, expect unrelenting camp.

A bit plodding and little of the comedic dialog works but that almost helps in this case. One of the few intentionally camp films that still works well even for modern audiences. What's great here is the way it indulges in the era and intentionally seems to encapsulate what it knows can't last. It seemed to take a good look into where their present would take us in the future. A production as large like this for a movie like this could never get made today. Surprisingly self aware and rewarding.

Within the first 10 or 15 minutes we're introduced to Jane Fonda in a plastic tit-suit travelling in her pink spaceship lined floor to ceiling with shag carpet. The movie never gets better than that. And really, how could it.

This is pure nonsense. But, it knows that it is nonsense. It is fun to look at in a kitschy camp sort-of-way, and a real throwback to the groovy late-sixties, but it is just a bunch of scenes strung together. Jane Fonda enhances this film from being an unwatchable mess.

Goes more than a bit pear-shaped in the final third, and plays more like a tasteless FLASH GORDON parody than an adaptation of the original comic strip . . . but Jane gives the title role more than it's worth, and there's quite a lot of jolly design on display. It's the sort of classic that one must never admit is a classic.

Sometimes I need to watch a delightfully silly movie. And what a delight it is to watch Jane Fonda at her peak pretending to be weightless while taking off her spacesuit, by rolling around on a green screen, with a fluffy room that poses as spaceship projected behind her, for 5 glorious minutes. Surprisingly PG for a sexy movie. With some 'deeper themes' thrown in the mix, it really pays to be in a relaxed non-critical state of mind, marvelling at how silly everything is.

Chintzy-looking Italian reproduction of the French erotic comic strip, starring the doll-like Fonda under her then-husband Vadim's direction. There are colors and costumes galore in an attempt to look space-y; but this movie, for all its frantic stabs at zaniness, is just barely wittier than the average American astronaut.

What impresses me most about Barbarella is that it manages to outdo every sci-fi/fantasy film of its era with its outlandish sets, characters, and of course, costumes-- while taking not a moment to explain a bit of it, and somehow manages to get away with the whole scheme. Next to Star Wars, its the most fun sci-fi adventure thats ever been made, even if its also the most goofy.

One of the major punchlines for any joke involving camp nonsense more or less lives up to its reputation: fun at first, especially with a garishly wretched (but undeniably inventive) production design and an agreeably silly tone. Unfortunately it can’t properly sustain itself, becoming dreary and repetitious; furious mugging from O’Shea and a game effort at holding everything together by Mrs. Vadim can only go so far. Still worthy of anyone’s time as a true iconic genre (and era) entry.

One word for you: weird. Not the most psychedelic movie I've seen, but it's up there. Keep in mind, though, that despite the 1977 PG re-rating, the original uncut movie definitely has parts that should not be seen by little kids. Sex is a constant theme, and there is real nudity.

The kind of sexy, kinky movie that makes you feel bad about being someone who likes sex and kink. The palette is colorful, but somehow, the direction, the cinematography, the writing, the acting, all make it feel bland and gray. The main character has basically no agency and keeps getting forced into uncomfortable situations and we're supposed to be turned on by this. The director made a point of saying she isn't a feminist or a liberated woman; dude, we know, that is massively clear. :/

As time marches on, films like Barbarella seem more novel and bizarre due to their complete incongruence with contemporary culture, hence their enduring cult appeal. It harks back to a time when there was a deliberate revolt against 'good taste', where camp was openly celebrated, and where sex was treated as a bit of good fun. Fonda plays the titular character with the right amount of sexiness and innocence, and the sets and effects are imaginatively gaudy and charmingly primitive.

Possibly the dirtiest pg-rated movie ever. That's got to count for something, as well as the craaazy costumes and set design. Still, couldn't Vadim & Southern have all that and hang it onto a story that wasn't quite so silly? (And not silly in a "I can't wipe the smile off my face way," but silly in a "this lack of focus and competency is getting tedious" way.)

There are a couple of really good things in this movie – namely, the music, production design, and Jane Fonda's body. Anything beyond that and this movie lost me. It played like a PG-rated porno, only with even worse acting. There are a few moments of unintentional hilarity, but this story would have felt paper-thin in a Star Trek episode, much less a full-length film. John Philip Law is particularly awful as the blind angel, Pygar.

I never was able to get into this. Jane Fonda is gorgeous in it and the movie revolves around that fact before suddenly realizing it has to do movie things and goes from mediocre soft core to so bad its good sci-fi. Just didn't do much for me. The costumes and set design are great for the time and I liked that the movie was self-aware enough to not stop laying it on thick. I don't know how to rate this so I'll cop out and just say 5/10. The acting is atrocious, and it all feels like it's created in the same room, and all written by the same guy who's high out of his mind, but it's all very self-aware at the same time. You get the idea that it's just going to be a softcore porn romp from the intro but it ends up being pretty tasteful about this, surprisingly enough. There are some movies that are so bad, they're considered good. This is not one of them. (In fairness, the costuming -- and un-costuming, I guess, since that's almost a constant in the film -- and sound were fairly good.) I'm not really sure whether the sets were supposed to be kitschy or just made on a limited budget. The story and characters were imaginative, but the pieces don't fit together to make it work.

Within the first ten minutes, Barbarella has crash-landed on a hostile planet, been caught by a bunch of children and almost been chewed to death by their dolls. Which shows very aptly both what is wrong and right with this. Basically, I can forgive the plot for being dumb, but not the main character and Barbarella truly is useless, constantly being passed around like a potato. Still, if you can look past the embarrassing fetish fantasies it does have a unique weirdness making it worth a watch.

It trash. But its very enjoyable trash. The most interesting aspect to me is the directors relationship to his leading lady. Being married to her at the time, she was obviously the visual focus, even if her characterization lacked focus all together. Similar in a weird way to And God Created Woman, also directed by Vadim, except when he was married to Brigitte Bardot.

Doesn't nearly manage the absurd, exhilarating, amoral heights of "Danger: Diabolik," but this is nevertheless good '60s kitsch silliness that doesn't take itself incredibly seriously. I was laughing at early scenes that mostly consist of static shots that clash amusingly with the zaniness it's presumably trying to summon up w/ its jangly '60s guitars, etc., but that may have been some attempt at a visual joke. Fonda's performance and -spectacular- costume and set design entirely carry the film.

It this is a GOOD movie? Maybe not, but I find myself entertained during each re-watch. I really dig the colorful visuals, matte-paintings, Fonda, her costumes and the general WTF spirit of the film. It’s a good example of a big budget film that would never get made on this era of calculated entertainment. On the negative side, Vadim is not a very good director and has difficulties in building suspense or handling the action scenes, but he sure had an eye for beauty and psychedelic visuals.
