In 1941, New York intellectual playwright Barton Fink comes to Hollywood to write a Wallace Beery wrestling picture. Staying in the eerie Hotel Earle, Barton develops severe writer's block. I'd describe Barton Fink as Adaptation meets Lost Highway meets Dante's Inferno, if it didn't predate two of those. Unlike most of the Coens' other work, which is largely stories to be taken literally but with dominant allegorical and metaphorical elements, this movie works best when you view it solely as an allegorical story about writing. But it's possible to interpret the movie on a more literal level too, and it's no less successful in that context. That's the mark of a great movie.

The Coen brothers' best film. In addition to being about writer's block, it concerns two things: (1) the way the Hollywood dream factory destroys talent; and (2) the way in which one can pretentiously imagine that I, imagining myself the talent, am going to save and protect the "common man" FROM Hollywood. The way in which the tension between these two concerns is played out constitutes the genius of the film, and of the two, very talented, Hollywood filmmakers responsible for its creation.

I would call this movie "an offbeat comedy that morphs into an intense psychological thriller" but in truth it defies description. John Goodman is great as always, as is pretty much everyone else. I'm sure I don't fully 'understand' it yet after one viewing, but that doesn't matter. Probably the Coens' best work, and that's saying a lot.

A sinister insight into the rampant superciliousness of writers and intellectuals alike, Barton Fink depicts the descent of a sheltered writer into a hell of self-realization and lack of innocence. The Coen brothers masterfully portray Fink's initial ignorance and lofty idealism about the "working man," which is quickly shot down by the reality thrust upon him. Brilliantly written, spectacularly filmed, masterfully directed, Barton Fink is certainly one of the Coen brothers' best.

One of the smartest satires ever made wrapped around an incredibly compelling and intense neo-noir script. The Coens have never made another picture as indelibly stylized as this one; the period decor, amazingly well-defined characters, and remarkably creative story all combine to create one of the most unique American movies around. It's a comedy, a thriller, a drama all at once, and it shifts so effortlessly between the three genres and moods that you never even notice.

Has everything I could ask for. Open-ended mystery, surrealism, black comedy, regular comedy, regular horror, technical prowess, (sound design, cinematography, acting) and John Goodman. While focusing on the nightmares of Hollywood, Fink's preoccupation with inner pain has him tuning out the elephant outside the room - WWII, that is (not Goodman you jerks), and turning towards Faulkner's escapism. But I think he can hear the trace of a raid siren in the bells, mosquitos, and buzzing violins...

Barton Fink is a extremely surreal look at a depressed screenwriter, and the goings on of his life, and the people he meets. You immediately get sucked into the world of Barton Fink. It has terrific atmosphere, and acting from both Turturro and Goodman. This is a different kind of film, one you will hate or love.

The 3rd act was like revisiting a scene from Mulholland Dr., weird and unique in that sense. The story is hard to describe; is it about Hollywood's shallow culture or Barton Fink's self-imposed struggle? This is a bold, multilayered film about films from one of my favorite American directors. I just love their exuberant way of storytelling. Recommended!

It's hard to not let the symbolism overwhelm you, and trying to interpret it in literal terms seems pointless. What matters is the holistic effect of it all, the atmospherics achieved in deconstructing Fink's creative process. The decrepit and internalized Hotel Earle, one of the greatest sets ever constructed, serves as wonderful counterpoint to the cosmopolitan Hollywood of the 1940s.

This is, in my opinion, the Coen's crowning achievement. It's one of their smaller films, but everything in it is brilliant. The allegory is complex and fully fleshed-out, the sound design is amazing, the acting has a the perfect combination of realism and satire, and the period is excellently constructed. And it's hilarious. I feel like this film is less flawed than the bros other work, but also less ambitious than some. Great either way.

This is really hard to review, cause there's so much to this movie, and I'm 100% positive there's even more that I missed. First off, it's weird. Kind of surreal, filled with sybolism, some of which makes sense, some of which I guarantee I didn't pick up on. It's extremely engrossing, too, and the ending is fantastic. John Goodman is just incredible here, and Turturro is great too. I wish I could rate this higher, but I feel like I shouldn't until I've figured it all out.

Does a fair job skewering petit-bourgeois liberal artistic sentiments. I love that Fink maintains a paternal and artistic distance from his subjects, believing his work to be above commerce and himself the enlightened savior of "the people," only to find himself a proletarianized and miserable worker in the film industry. I like to call this "being punk-slapped by reality." Excellent film.

The Coens once again have the courtesy to provide us with laughing material and fantastic performances on our road to Hell. Without spoiling too much, I will say that this film manages to turn the complete (in its context) non-sequitur of "Heil Hitler" into a down right quotable one-liner. This is the level of darkness we're dealing with, here. Enjoy.

"Look upon me! I'll show you the life of the mind!" This is the Coens doing cinema in the vein of Repulsion, Eraserhead, and The Shining, all with the sticky-hot dread of southern America in the peculiar hell of Hollywood and their own brand of dark comedy. Observe a man wrasslin' with his hubris and uncertain iconoclasm under the stifling demands of the film studio. No other Coen Bros film is so rich with Faustian and Kafkaesque allusions. Definitely one to see more than once...

Dead-pan comedy about artistic pretension! John Turturro gets Joel Silver'd - after Broadway adulation he gets contracted to write a wrestling picture. Fink spectacularly fails to sell out, gets writers block and haressed by hard-boiled 'tecs and John Goodman's bloated anti-Christ. Often dismissed as pretentious itself, rather the film is stone testament to how deep rooted the Coens sense of fun is.

Very tense first hour and a half or so... You really feel like you're suffering from writer's block too, or that the writer of the script is. It all seems meandering and John Goodman's character is the only thing that makes it easy to swallow. Then BAM! Mad Muntz and the rest of the film seems to end too fast. What a tease, it almost demands to be re-watched! But then I realize that I really don't care about Barton Fink, so why spend another 2hrs staring at him while he sits in a shitty hotel?

Barton Fink has one of the most masterful scripts I've encountered in a thriller like this; it's really no wonder this is so highly regarded by their true fans. Turturro & Goodman are both excellent in another typical Coen brothers work of genius. There are also some wonderful support performances, Shalhoub in particular springs to mind. A very engaging and envolving experience just when you think that this movie is drifting nowhere, the Coens supurb storytelling drags you back in again. The ambiguous ending isn't to everyones taste, but 'Barton Fink' is dark, funny, packed full of clever symbolism and lovely little touches, and it's totally surreal.

Ah, Barton Fink. Even the name has a disconcerting ring. A very slick and very cool film. And by cool I mean hot, maybe too hot. I could yell clumsy and oafish remarks like some sort of fishmonger, but I haven't the faintest notion of how to describe this film to the common man. And I, most likely, being one of those, or at least trying to perceive myself as a common man, have no real way of interpreting it. I did enjoy it, I do believe. Barton Fink. Call me a common man, but I found the surreal third act a bit jarring in its offloading of abstract symbolism (which was a bit too much so), as artistically affecting as it was, and despite the underlying meta narrative. Still, the great turns, quirky characters, moody atmosphere, and memorable dialogue throughout (Jack's monologues are hilarious; Barton and Charlie have a great dynamic-"I could tell you some stories-" "Sure you could!") make for a highly engaging Hollywood satire regardless.

I don't think I got Barton Fink. Turturro & Goodman deliver mesmerising performances, while I wanted to see more of Buscemi, Shalhoub & Mahoney's characters. Unfortunately from the point Fink is accosted in the bar by several units of uniformed officers, the film lost me. There is religious allegory mixed into what lies between absurdism and surrealism, and I didn't really enjoy it. Lipnick's (Lerner) final speech trapping him under contract was good, but didn't really conclude the film for me.
