Basmati Blues

Predictable drama-lite with the colourful premise of a pretty American biologist going to India to promote her breakthrough rice variety. The locations and costumes are so heavily sanitised they make Indian farmland look like a first world country. Numerous Disney-esque musical interludes are not catchy but do keep the mood light. So much about this movie seems garbage, but you just have to lower your expectations and consider it cheap, harmless fun rather than Brie Larson's career suicide.

Basmati Blues is simply not a good movie. As a musical it fails to deliver a cohesive ensemble, opting to shoehorn a forgettable show tune at every opportunity. The acting is passable, but the characters are often petty and childish, creating drama merely for narrative necessity. The plot is simplistic with schizophrenic tonal shifts, which is even apparent between musical numbers. Ultimately, it's a film devoid of nuance, that seems patronising to everyone involved, especially the audience.

Basmati Blues is one of the blandest types of movies you can watch. When I can tell you almost exactly what will happen based on a two-minute trailer, it's probably too generic of a movie. Throw us a curveball every now and then, or at least give us characters we'll root for as they tread down the cliched path. The film does neither, and winds up being a boring experience. Only the music is tolerable. The rest is awful.

Lighthearted but bland fish-out-of-water east-meets-west romcom that really wasn't as offensive as I heard. I think people just hate Brie Larson. The musical numbers were fine. This was filmed more like a TV show. So-so plot about the evil Mogul empire. Fav scene: Love Don't Knock at My Door was a decent bland song with a silly dance number.
