An enjoyable biopic with a great cast. Bowie as Warhol was surely the highlight, and Wright did a wonderful job in the title role.

Bowie's dry-camp upward inflection at the end of each sentence attached to his disconnected demeanor raises the bar on Warhol portrayals and apparently Basquiat was black.

Possibly the only film to make me less interested in someone I actually liked. And I'm not even talking about Bowie.

Basquiat to me is the ultimate example of the art world huffing their own farts, and this film despite the impressive cast only added to that impression.

A very general bio-pic. Although Wright is impressive as the main man, not all the members of this impressive ensemble cast are as good. At times, this film is very underwhelming (like the very lacklustre, sudden, and lazy ending). Yet there's plenty of satisfaction in watching the scenes of Basquiat spraying graffiti poetry on public property or the scenes of him at work on his paintings (that have been impressively replicated for this film).

Watched around time of release at the instigation of my girlfriend at that time, who happened to be an artist: she liked it; I didn't.

For some reason when I stole this from my housemate, I thought it would be a horror - it pays to read the back of the DVD. Still quite intriguing.

The use of Bob Dylan's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" during a scene of a dissolving relationship over heroin use has to be one of best uses of music I've ever seen in a film. The whole film masters the feeling of a detached heroin high so well, however, that this is the only time it really manages to break through with any kind of emotion. What a precise emotion though!

Under Quarantine Film Reviews #72: It features a great subtle performance from Jeffrey Wright as well as Bowie, but the wandering direction from Schnabel left a lot to be desired.

MOVIES WITH A VIEW@BROOKLYN BRIDGE PARK.

Crazy dude scrawls crappy paintings while being mentored by a neurotic under pressure. News at eleven.

It is unstable, both emotionally and artistically, and even at the same time, and it would be bad without Basquiat's art, but that's why it's good.
