What a cast! This was back when Burton was still working at the top of his stylish game. Also, it's an amusing movie - the amount of sexual innuendo in a franchise that was supposed to be (in part, at least) aimed towards kids is nuts, but everything has a goofy charm to it. My favorite Batman film.

Feels too much like a Tim Burton movie with Batman characters than a true Batman movie. Burton's unique visuals don't really harm this movie but it does end up making it too much of his own style than that of the source material. Aside from these comments the story was good and the cast was pretty much spot on for their respective characters. This film also suffered slightly from the usual cheesiness that is present in all forms of Batman.

Dark and silly it kind of works but not completely. As an enjoyable experience it's good because of Walken, Devito and Pfeiffer creating entertaining and memorable characters. But on any deeper level, even just as an adventure/action film, it falters because the film doesn't have a consistent enough tone to give the plot developments weight.

(2nd viewing) Barely made my "good" tier, thanks to Pfeiffer's awesome portrayal and her character's interaction with Batman. The 1st act and last 15 minutes are highly pleasing, everything in between is pretty silly. These films haven't aged well at all...

This film is capital-H Horny. One of the best superhero films of all-time. It contains all of Burton's tricks, but without it feeling tiresome. Great, German Expressionist-like imagery, makes Gotham feel isolating and closed-in. The shots/lighting make Batman feel brooding and split without having to resort to expository dialogue. All three characters are living with split identities, and it's interesting to see how the film explores that.

Michael Keaton is by far my favorite non-Adam West Batman, and the biggest failure of Returns is pushing him to the side in favor of the messy villain subplots. Devito was born to play the Penguin. Walken borrowed his hair from Mozart's' corpse.

Burton really went all out with this, producing one of his best films. It plays out more like a gothic fairytale than a superhero film. The lush sets combined with Elfman Elfmanning it up all over the soundtrack give it that unique Burton feel in a time before everyone got sick of that style. Throw in DeVito's Penguin, Walken's Christopher Walken and Pfeiffer's truly amazing Catwoman (MIAOW indeed) and it's easily my favourite pre-Nolan Batman.

Often incredibly self-indulgent, the script feels like a high speed collision of competing stories and the politics of the very fickle population of Gotham seems like it's a response to something that got lost to the mists of time. However, it's also probably the purest expression of Burton's corrupted carnival aesthetic and it is actually pretty compelling in spite of its myriad of flaws.

Incomparable to Nolan's films. In 1992, this was the coolest thing around. The non-stop action, penguins with rockets, the merchandise (Batmobile ftw)... Burton's incarnations of Batman may have cheese and over-the-top villains, but they feel like comic books movies. Pfeiffer creates the definitive Catwoman with a smoldering performance and DeVito gets as much possible out of the Penguin. Add Elfman's iconic soundtrack and enjoy the dark and absurd carnival ride through Burton's Gothic visuals.

This is one of the better Batman movies ( Although not as good as The Dark Knight, Batman and Batman Begins! )! Danny DeVito is perfect as the Penguin, and has great acting from Keaton and Walken! Has all the dark elements from the comics, and really captures Gotham! Batman and the rest of the characters though are really odd and Burtonesque! Overall a great superhero/action film!

Burton succeeds by simply pleasing himself. Everything is overbearing, enormous and expressionist. Locations have nothing in common with reality, the universe existing within a giant German snowglobe. Wayne becomes a vampire justice-god figure. He sleeps deep in his fortress till needed. It's a welcome step up from the confused bully-thug of the first film. His tenuous, last-gambit relationship with Gotham PD and his flippant use of deadly force lend him an air of absolute danger.

This time, director Tim Burton was allowed to make Batman the way he wanted. The villains are grosser and Batman is more troubled. Burton went just a little too far, and Returns is a confusing film with minimal focus. The abundance of bad guys only made it annoying, and the film, though among the better Batman films, isn't a very good representation of the hero. For what it was, the actors did a good job for this extra Burtonesque Batman. Meh!

This is just one of the most bizarre films ever released as a big mainstream summer blockbuster. Between the Penguin and everything about him, rockets strapped to penguins marching on Gotham (hell, the art deco Gotham all around), killer clowns, Elfman’s circus tunes, Selina Kyle learning martial arts because some cats licked her, this is just utterly strange. But unfortunately I also find it kinda long and boring at the same time. Just not a bit “Burtonverse” guy; sorry.

It lacks an emotional core, but to be frank, it doesn't really need one. The Batman series is perhaps Burton's best exercise in tone, character, and aesthetic. It's exciting, full of charismatic characters, and as a byproduct, absolutely insane. It is the most entertaining Batman movie Burton could have conceived.

People say the silliness came back to the Batman movies when Schumacher took over, but did they watch all the ridiculousness that was Penguin?! Still, Burton handles the wackiness well and creates a tale of brooding darkness with a sense of humor. The theme of reclaiming lost identity was also quite compelling.

Easily the darkest and most deranged of all the Batman films. Nobody gets out clean. The set designs are truly astonishing, some of the best I've ever seen on film, like German expressionism meets Disney by way of Fellini, and Keaton seems far more assured in the role this time around. Devito's Penguin is one of the great movie villains. Burton created a more psychological, trauma based approach to the characters that is strangely affecting, and the visuals are pure pulp poetry.

Smashing entertainment, with Tim Burton giving his imagination free reign in telling the tale of the vengeful Penguin (Danny DeVito), the vengeful Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer), and the Batman (Michael Keaton) who seems almost bemused by the madness around him. Narratively a bit thin, but for character (DeVito and Pfeiffer are both superb), spectacle, grotesquerie, dark humor (with a hint of political satire), and atmosphere, it's a feast. And, you know, it's even genuinely sad at times.

Goofy as shit but it's my favorite Batman film. Despite its camp value, it's also dark to the point of Burton being ejected from the director's chair. Gotham City is fleshed out as a garish, brutal dystopia, something that was severely lacking in Nolan's films. Walken doesn't hurt, either. "You'll have the ear of the media. IMO, Burton's best "Batman." Pfeiffer adds magnificent color and pizzazz as Catwoman / Selina Kyle, and DeVito is superb as the tragic Penguin / Oswald Cobblepot. This is my second favorite of the "Batman" movies, though I think "The Dark Knight" towers above all the rest.

The plot and script do leave a little to be desired and it has to be said Burton's first Batman is a much more engaging affair due to its much better character development. That said I love Burton's Gotham. Its stylish, wacky and eccentric, but also tasteful and brutal. There are several excellent performances here, particuarly the brilliant Danny DeVito. A wonderful film to waste a couple of hours with, wholly entertaining and completely nuts!

Far more consistent in quality than the first, and seems far more like a Tim Burton film, which is only good. The Penguin isn't an as convincing or interesting villian as The Joker, but DeVito plays him well. The dialog gets pretty bad in places though, with some really remarkably bad one-liners. The Catwoman/Batman relationship is very well written however. Slightly better than the first overall, but still not much on other Burton films.

I saw this movie once, when I was 12 years old or something, and I thought it was slightly disturbing and weird. So yeah, I guess I was the right age for it. A personal favorite. Michelle Pfeiffer gives the performance of a life time as Catwoman, and secures that she'll never be topped. This is a dark dark Batman movie (the way it should be), but with the magic quality only Tim Burton can provide. And the score by Danny Elfman is amazing. I love that we live in a universe where the Batman intellectual property can be digested through the creatives lenses of both Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan. If only Marty Scorsese didn't have a raging hard-on against comic book movies, would love to see his R&B infused, freeze framed, version of this classic story. Anywho, Burton's aesthetic gives this dark movie a certain LSD nightmare sheen that is oddly appealing. It's still about a man in tights though, so.

The climax is sufficiently overblown to provoke you either to sit up in your seat or roll your eyes, depending on how much you care at that point. For me, it was all a bit much when the penguins marched their leader into the sewage to rest in peace. The most interesting element by far is Bruce and Selena's relationship, and it's those parts I enjoyed the most. Despite her fragile state of mind, Selena somehow brings something relatable and human to a world otherwise drenched in whimsy.

His version of the Penguin is creepy and really funny. Pfeiffer takes the female lead to a whole other level from Basinger. The second Batman film in the original quadrology. The villains (Penguin and Catwoman) are the most captivating characters of the movie, especially the Penguin. Can't go wrong with Danny DeVito. Surprisingly goofier than I thought it was, only having seen it once. While it's bleaker than the first Batman was (no Prince songs to be found here), you still have stuff like Penguin's circus gang early on in the movie here and there, and the general absurdity of the main villains.

The recurring secret vs. public identity dynamic for all four of the main players makes for some intriguing tension and drama (see Bruce and Salina's battles and flirts; Shreck and Oswald's campaign). Batman's fall from grace is another compelling, if brief, plot thread. Unfortunately there's still lots of cheesiness here too (see the penguin suicide bombers, penguin pallbearers, penguin duck boats?). The one-liners are hit ("life's a bitch and now so am I") or miss (anything by gross Penguin).

Yes, the plot is a bit lackluster, Batman sometimes gets lost, and the comicbookness can turn into cartoonishness. The rest is one of Burton's best films, weaving themes of humanity, duality, and perception and power while getting great performances out of the entire cast and putting together another fantastic design for for Gotham City. I'd say this movie is comparable to the first Burton Batman. It learns from some of the flaws of the first movie, but then falls down on other fronts. Batman is a bit more competent compared to the first film. He rarely gets beaten up by the henchmen. However, the film is a bit overly dark and the origins/motivations/characters of Penguin and Catwoman just don't hit the right notes for me. In many ways Christopher Walken was the most well rounded villain of the bunch.

Burton, Keaton and writer Sam Hamm return for the second Batman film and deliver the goodies: dark atmosphere, brilliantly conceived and executed art direction, tongue-in-cheek humour, wonderful music courtesy of the one and only Danny Elfman, the unique character of Penguin memorably portrayed by Danny DeVito, a fine Michelle Pfeifer facing off a finer Michael Keaton, a splendid Christopher Walken and on top of that a script arguably more intriguing and layered.
