One of the best war novels well-crafted for the screen. The plot devices of coming of age, war and difficult romances are intertwined smoothly. It's a very satisfying film.

A soap opera disguised as a war film. OK for a rainy day, but that's about all.

A pretty mediocre film with a little too much cheese and extra fat.

None of this is very good, but it doesn't seem like the cast or director Raoul Walsh are really to blame. It's a very bland, by-the-numbers adaptation by Leon Uris himself. None of the melodrama has much punch, and it prevents the film from really being much of a war film a all. L.Q. Jones, in his film debut, plays a character named "L.Q. Jones".

"Battle Cry" presents a dramatic portrayal of Marine life, weaving together narratives of rigorous training, raucous revelry, fierce brawling, and intense romances, culminating in a battle scene that falls short. The film's strength lies in its adeptly crafted script and richly fleshed-out characters, making it a compelling watch despite its flaws.
