The opening shot of course is just beautiful. Ah to be a gambling addict in the French Riviera instead of one that lives in a small apartment in the suburbs of vancouver

I guess never send a Demy to do a Malle's job?

What a terrible ending.

Intersting and somewhat original characters is the only aspect of this otherwise pretty mediocre movie that I enjoyed and cared about. Everything else is meh, the soundtrack is obnoxious and the ending is plain terrible.

It's not like the archetypal Jacques Demy film, as it's in black and white and it has zero musical numbers in it. But it's still a great film, a fast and loose gambling story set in scenic French casinos, all sunny vistas and smoky rooms. Like with Lola, the film combines the stylish charm of French New Wave with the rhythms of the Hollywood musical, and the result is exhilarating.

Somehow the remarkable opening tracking shot conveys all the delirious and tragic acceleration of life that unfolds during the movie. The characters and situations are portrayed realistically and honestly, Moreau is excellent, Legrand's music is used to very fine effect, and in my view the ending is great. Demy seems to be an endlessly surprising filmmaker.

It never caught me, really. Okay, I wasn't paying as much attention as I should, but I found several things annoying, sadly they included the interacting of the two main characters as well as the musical theme. Never got anywhere, the movie, a real art film, you might say. Still, had some charm at times.

Belongs to the same canon as Days of Wine and Roses, The Panic in Needle Park, and Last Tango in Paris. These characters are pitiful and compulsive, but Demy is a sensitive filmmaker who insists on empathy. Even before diving headlong into musicals, his keen feeling for rhythm is evident in Legrand's airy score and easy-going pace. A simple and lovely film.

A gambler and her puppy-dog enabler. It makes an OK character study even though it doesn't ever feel like it goes anywhere. The cinematography is very good and the sometimes over-the-top musical score tries to add to the characterization, but the too-contrived ending really detracts.

An excellent Demy film about a young man who develops a taste for the roulette wheel, which leads him into a doomed relationship with a doomed woman (radiantly played by Moreau). It's not an especially substantial film, and the ending is questionable, but it just carries you along. Demy seems to capture the allure and pitfalls of gambling quite well, and its interesting to watch how the dynamic shifts between Jean and Jackie as their luck changes. Legrand provides another charming, airy score.

very different for jacques demy. rather than a stylish romance, this is a direct and uncomplicated warning about the dangers of gambling, which can be a metaphor for all sorts of things if you're into overinterpretation. great opening shot and definitely well done, but not something that really stands out as a grand artistic vision.

The way it barrels through the first act, hooking you immediately, earns it its slow, inexorable decline into misery. The clattering piano theme is memorable. The abrupt ending may be intentional, just one final and sudden reversal of fortune in keeping with the theme, but it doesn't really land regardless.

Moreau does a wonderful job of both attracting and repelling ... you understand his obsession while clearly seeing the doom.

Maybe the worst ending to a great movie I've ever seen. It was like they just ran out of footage...
