Look I know its a nice movie, but just don't like these sad films. They just don't usually work for me.

My late great-grandmother, one of the most amazing women I ever knew, really loved the soundtrack to this movie. The film itself is fair enough and has some sure-fire tear-jerk moments (if you allow yourself to experience those feelings), but I'll always think of it fondly mostly due to my Grandma. For many people the songs are sappy and cheesy, but they really get to me just because of the association.

Even though I'm generally a Bette Midler fan, I put off watching this for over 30 years. I'm glad I did. Didn't hate it as much as I expected, but it's not good by any standard. Even Bette's singing is uneven (and what's with the bad lip-synching? Bette ought to be able to do that... post-synchronization problems?), although her jazz club number early on is marvelous. Hershey is quite good, and hers is the much more interesting character, but she's steamrolled by the Divine Miss M every time.

Oddly structured weeper is more of a Midler vanity project, with Hershey's role, (arguably more interesting and has the lion's share of story thrust), flattened and pushed out of the way by Midler's intensely brassy, Grandma Madea-like wrecking ball; it takes one hell of an ego to dominate another actor's dying scenes (and even moreso to steal the tearful farewell with the dying character’s child). Raise the score if you're a Midler fan, but her unchecked egotism makes it a pretty tough watch.

Lol why do people love this so much? It is like a Lifetime movie before that became a subgenre, but with Bette Midler singing a bunch of random shit in weird fake musicals.

This movie has two things working against it. First, it's directed by Garry Marshall, who makes hokey, syrupy films, and second, it stars the ever annoying Bette Midler.

My mom and sister loved this movie and watched it bunch while I was growing up. It's a movie I have no real business liking and yet I rarely left the room when they put it on. It's as chick-flicky as you are going to get and I have no real desire to ever see it again, but I will admit it has it's merits. It's actually not too terrible until the end when it starts getting sappy as all hell and we get the terrible, "Wind Beneath My Wings" song.

Decent chick picture. Barbara Hershey can act circles around her more famous co-star

I will never forget the sounds of my childhood - mom, up late grading tests, listening to the strains of Bette Midler wailing out "From A Distance". And the boobs song.

Although Bette Midler is beyond talented as a singer, and acceptable as an actress, the characters and plot were a bit too obnoxiously predictable for me to enjoy this movie. 2 girls from different 'sides of the tracks' become best friends and split up as they grow due to the strains of adulthood (mixed in with fame on Midler's end). In the end they reconcile. I'll admit that I shed a few tears on the final beach scene, but that was the only moment that truely moved me.

It may not be the original tear-jerker, but it's certainly one of the best. Full of comedy, great musical numbers and real pathos. Brilliant casting for the young Bette Midler role and some wonderful scenery during the film makes for a film to remember.
