Interesting take on somewhat familiar material distinguishes itself with its gritty B&W photography and the very Scottish (and clearly personal) milieu in which the story takes place; it's a shame that Welsh does virtually nothing to flesh out any of his characters. There's fertile ground for a dissection of the generation gap or even the political context of the times, which are touched on but never explored. With a little polishing, this could have been a considerable achievement.
