It seems the makers of BEAUTIFUL CREATURES realized the inescapable silliness of the material and chose to camp it up as much as possible. Certainly the performances--Jeremy Irons, Emma Thompson, and Emmy Rossum all devour the scenery--and Southern-deep-fried tone suggest this is the case. The writing and directing (and effects) are a bit uneven, but for the most part it's more enjoyable than you'd expect. Plus, the hero (Alden Ehrenreich, quite good) quotes Charles Bukowski. And that's awesome.

At the risk of losing my "man card", I'm not afraid to admit that I was really into this. The inevitable Twilight comparisons should all come out in this flick's favor; it's much more interesting and better executed. Even if you take Twilight out of the equation completely, the flick holds up on its own as entertaining, emotional, a bit on the campy side, but never falling off that cliff into stupidity. Really on-point performances and excellent cinematography and music. A pleasant surprise!

I found it really hilarious, actually. The lead actor was charismatic and made me laugh with every line, hopefully not just because of his voice. I also love the lack of CGI for special effects. They cared when they made this film.

I really wanted to like this movie: I respect LaGravenese as a writer, Emma Thompson has a lot of fun in her schizophrenic magical role, Jeremy Irons' sad, genteel performance wooed me, & Alden Ehrenreich is an extremely charming & resourceful young actor. But the tone is off, the CGI & production design is pretty chintzy, the young girls' characters are underwritten or confusing, & the fantasy story is hackneyed & overly expositional.

The suburban-life tortured-teenager shtick has been done, and better; the supernatural stuff? Well, that didn't need to be done in the first place. Watchable, though.

I really did like this movie. For men, I don't think it would be so very appealing, but I'm into romance and if it has some magic and supernatural in it, that's all right up my alley! This romance of "sticking in there through thick and thin" despite all your differences and insecurities is what makes this a great find. The main male characters wasn't a heartthrob but his humor and determination made him so very appealing. The storyline is a step up from the Twilight movies, most definitely!

Competent in surprising ways, this film whipsaws from supernatural teenage melodrama to humor and name checking Bukowski and Vonnegut. I wish ol' Beaver Casablancas had been given more to do, but this movie scores major wish fulfilment points by delivering a well-deserved fate to Civil War re-enactors. There's lot to enjoy if you relax and hope that likes of Emma Thompson, Jeremy Irons, and Viola Davis aren't taking things too seriously.

During credits there's line missing, 'Inspired by Twilight franchise'. However there are few important differences to aforementioned 'inspiration'. There is not K.Steward present and her stipid lipbiting, characters aren't completely flat and it contains some comic depiction of religious extremists. Yet there's too much teena(n)ger love bullshit to be digestible by normal mature human being.

About a million times better than Twilight but unfortunately it's still a pretty bad film. By no means offensively bad, and it has some great parts (most scenes with Emma Thompson), but still bad. Too long and occasionally downright nonsensical; I don't mind supernatural fantasy but there has to feel like there's some logic to the rules of the universe, and in Beautiful Creatures I could find none. Also, the romance was hard to get into as neither of the two leads were very interesting.

Top badass moment? Sometimes you have to sacrifice your own happiness for others; that's a nice moral that we could all benefit from, but sadly I’m too old now; I had to make do with learning about ethics from Tom & Jerry when I was young. This is such a nice film too, with a nice plot, nice script, nice looking characters, nice costumes, nice music, nice photography and nice effects. Alice Englert looks an awful lot like Jennifer Lawrence too. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

The first hour of this thing is actually quite entertaining--fantastical and goofy as all hell, but appealingly performed, with sharp dialogue and a winning awareness of its own silliness. Unfortunately, that accursed "story" eventually kicks in, and hour two is kind of a slog, with too heavy a reliance on dorky mythology and a disappointing shift in tone to ultra-seriousness. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would, though.

The rise young adult books is evidence of the slow literary deterioration of our society. When the millions of teens gobble up books specifically designed with modest lexicons and plots evoking youth empowerment, it's entirely not surprising, but any adult should be able to demand more out of their books, and for that matter, their movies. That this movie was based on one of the cloned masses of young adult books is quite apparent and for that, I hate it.

I won't say it isn't well filmed, because it is. However there is a lack of magic (ha!) in the acting and script. It feels hamfisted and familiar. I do however love the James Van Der Beek from Varisty Blues accent.

A little bit overdone, plenty of corny moments, but also some interesting effects that make the movie enjoyable. Not great, but a nice little supernatural tale.

It appears to be trying to do too many things at once, yet it succeeds at a lot of them, especially switching from humor to drama with a subject matter that's hard to take seriously. Two performances were particularly noteworthy what with the dramatic range they display, Emma Thompson is at her quirky best, and Emmy Rossum plays the exact opposite of the Phantom's innocent Christine. The movie keeps you continually off balance, in a good way, yet you know where it's going to end up.

This movie was a pretty big waste of time. Despite the fact that it has great actors like Viola Davis, Emmy Rossum, Jeremy Irons and Emma Tompson in it. The accents all seem too campy and all the characters feel very 2D. Some of the lines are just awful and there are a few too many political jabs thrown into a teen romance film involving witches, sorry I mean "Casters". The main character is sort of charming for the most part. I'd take well written creatures over beautiful ones any day.

Brighter than Twilight in its depiction of teen angst -- you know, growing up, feeling lost, dealing with love as if it was some sort of curse. It's not an anti-Christian fantasy, but I like how LaGravenese finds room for irony, funny remarks (Interception, Finale Destination 6, "Guess Satan hates sequels too") and to celebrate knowledge instead of purity. He reads books and changes his bored fate; she gets rid of hers by reading the Caster Bible day and night. Nice message for kids/teens.

It's hard to recommend a film like Beautiful Creatures. Most people who want to see it are going to see it regardless of its quality, and it's not good enough to overcome its weaknesses for those who aren't in its target audience. It's not bad and it won't feel like a complete waste of time if you do choose to watch it. It has good lead actors who have strong chemistry and snappy dialogue, but the waste of its supporting cast and unclear universe building stop it from being a success.

This is a fairly good teenager movie. The usual elements are there like having to get out of hometown, and stupid classmates, but this isn't all cliché because, thankfully, the jocks and bullies aren't there. The male main character is enjoyable, while the girl actually incites interest. But American's idea of spiritual, supernatural is still rather lame. Bottom line: I enjoyed the movie :)

I liked lovers. They were pretty natural. Emma Thompson's got plenty room to have fun. But otherwise there was not much for my taste. The story was pretty unstable, not to talk about terrible effects.

I thought this wasn't too bad. It wasn't anything amazing, but it had some good things going for it. I liked the American south setting a lot. I enjoyed the performances from Jeremy Irons, Emma Thompson and Emmy Rossum. Unfortunately, there were flaws too. A lot of the characterisation was poor, the climax was incredibly underwhelming, and the mythology didn't always make sense. Probably a little forgettable in the end, but not a waste of time.

I enjoyed this film, the actors were all good, the main characters very likable, the setting was quite nice and it doesn't take itself too seriously all the time which makes for an enjoyable watch. It all becomes a bit more serious in the second half, but it's still pretty good. Nice supernatural teenage romance flick.

Not the worse, at least for a teen romance thing. Some new elements coming from the source book I guess, compared to other take on witches and magic. A bit cheesy the kids' focus on these books, but the lead dude seemed to outshine many supporting actors
